It's the same, but also worse. They aren't supporting it with any expansions. This is mostly a response to Etsy stores making 3D components of nearly every piece of the Catan game. Etsy makers make tons of 3D components and accessories for Catan. This is just the official, costlier response.

I love catan, but... this seems really expensive for some plastic that probably cost nothing for them to manufacture.

Killer deal! I own both and I paid much more than this.

With regards to the pricing concerns, you are getting three games in two (Catan, Seafarers, and Cities and Knights), and after pricing the 2d versions on Amazon, you are only paying $60 more for the 3d versions.

Lastly, the tiles are not cheap plastic but are painted and highly detailed. May not be important to some, but great for the Catan enthusiasts that to have a more eye appealing version of this classic game!

Does this play any different from the 2D Catan? I'm no diehard, but at nearly 3 times the price is it worth it to break into the 3rd dimension?

Wish they had the 5-6 player additions at this price level. I would def rebuy the 3d version if they included it.

My friends and I 3D printed a Catan set for 6 players with magnets to hold it in place. There are loads of free models out there if you have a printer. It was also awesome to paint and a group activity for our gaming people. At this price, I'd expect to at least get the 6 player set.

The base game was $99 a few years ago, through Target (even less if you B2G1 hacked it) so theoretically it could go lower.

I have both of the 3D sets.
Pros:
-I love having the resin models and tiles locked into the sea borders. The board doesn't shift at all. Very useful.
-Everything is very well made (only 1 piece broke and it was easily super glued back together).
-Base game box is well marked and everything fits back in easily. Setup and tear down is a breeze.
-the pieces are painted and that costs a lot of production money but they look great.

Cons:
-pricey, but considering how much quality you're getting, it's reasonable.
-Seafarers set box is horribly marked and not well delineated from the Knights expansion pieces. You have to know what pieces are for which expansion out of the box and getting stuff back in the blue box is a pain. Plus the blue trays are lower quality plastic than the red trays in the base game.
-The boxes are huge and heavy and don't fit on a Kallax. I don't mind this because I have a closet, but make sure they are supported on the shelf.

At $100 each, I'd say it's worth it for the base game. I could have skipped the expansion box and think $80 is more appropriate. But there is a lot of content here and the pieces are high quality.

I love playing Catan, but these prices are exploitative. Imagine if a video game published in 1995 was still selling for $60-100. Gamers would be furious!
You do realize that $50 in 1995 is roughly $102 today, right? Plus, cost of development is 10x what it was back then. I am glad it's ONLY a $20 increase (so far) on game prices. By all calculations, it should be closer to $100 per title.

Gamers are furious over everything. Their opinion on anything matters 0. They act like they boycott games and then it has record sales. They have the attention span of a goldfish and constantly preorder games from companies that have screwed them. They complain about reused assets, but when they change the assets, it's no longer "what the original creator's intended". They will literally complain if a game trailer has a puddle in it and then the actual game releases without the puddle.

No one should care about what gamers think, not even the developers who sell them games care what they think.
