I send my oil to Blackstone Labs to have an analysis done after every oil change. Their experts told me that time is of no worry nowadays with modern oil. The only thing that matters is the mileage.

340k miles on my 03' Toyota Tacoma…my advise: just change the oil no matter what brand (within reason) every 5k or less because it doesn't cost that much to do so…this oil is made by Warren Oil Co btw

It's purely politics and money.

This!!! Finally someone actually knows what's going on.

I run Rotella T6 5W-40 in my gen 3 Prius, and at 260k miles it doesn't use a drop of oil! These engines are notorious for oil burn issues due to coked up control rings.

My theory, which yes could be wrong, is the control rings get coked up due to using a 20 weight. To think of an oil that gets past the rings, burns and you get the stick control rings.

I can feel the engine run much quieter when oil change at 3k vs 5k+. Even my corolla hybrid, the engine somehow run much quieter when I changed it at 5k vs waiting til 7k+.

Yeah charging 30$ bucks for oil is more profitable then selling a 35k car or repairing a 10 to 15k engine.

If you had issues with your vehicle, say a Jeep, because you followed their recommendations, would you buy another Jeep? If my vehicle didn't last more than 3-4 years, I certainly wouldn't buy another from the same manufacturer. Not sure how fooling customers into ruining their engines would be in a car company's best interest.

Some cars have potential oil burning issues due to the bad piston rings design. These cars should change oil more frequently from what I heard. If your car doesn't have that kinda issue, your car is probably fine with what the factory recommended.

I would normally agree with you, but in the case of the Honda BVGA 5-speed autos in the mid-2000s, they were notorious for premature failure no matter how much care they received. I have first hand experience with them because my mother owned one and I serviced it. It got a drain and fill with legit Honda Z1 and later Honda DW-1 every ~15K. It even received 4 D&Fs nearly back to back at 100K to imitate a full exchange. Still failed. I believe their statement to be true, after all they were there - not us.

It is less viscous when cold, yes. Less viscous = less pump strain = fractionally better MPG until it's warmed up. I have always been a proponent of 'thinner' winter ratings (the number before the W in 5W-30 as an example). Even the oil blenders and refiners are starting to publicly confirm this can be done (citation: look specifically at the silver part of the label below 0W-20 on this Quaker State bottle https://www.walmart.com/ip/Quaker.../144870236). The key benefit isn't really MPGs. The key benefit is faster oil flow getting to critical parts on cold starts due to the lower cold viscosity and typically lower pour point.
