LOL they need to save those huge packing boxes for things like, 1 x microSD card…
It depends on the airline. I've had this backpack for 2 years and fly a good amount and Frontier will def make you size check it. Spirit is a bit more lenient and has only made me check it once but I had a good amount of stuff in it. If you pack it completely full it is the size of a carry on. I managed to pack 2 suits, a pair of shoes, 4 full sets of clothing, a compact garment steamer, and my laptop and electronics in this thing. It really can hold a lot and since it's cloth and not hard plastic you can bulge this thing out. After 2 years of abuse the attachment point of the straps is starting to tear but I can still use it. My only gripe about this backpack is the outer pocket only has one zipper and it opens up on the hinge side of the backpack so if you forget to zip it closed completely and you open up the backpack your stuff will fall out. Another thing to be aware of is this doesn't open up like a backpack from the top it opens up like luggage which can be a good thing or bad thing depending on your expectations.
I have this model. It arrived fine. It's not a ridgid pack.

Lost faith in Amazon backpacks since they started folding them in half for shipping. Totally ruining thier rigidity.

It depends how much you place in it. I use it for travel. If you don't pack it too much, use the compression clips and don't use the 2in expansion zipper you can. But it is great as a carry-on being 40L and 2in expandable. Definitely a great bag. Have been traveling with it for two years

Would you think it's a bit too large as a gym backpack. I mostly need to carry gym accessories, shoes and a work laptop, a change of clothes.

Did you purchase the XL size that is 20x14x7"? Frontier personal item size limit is 18x14x8". I don't know if the backpack's 20" dimension can be squished down. tia

After reading through reviews, I decided to get this Carry-on Backpack. It's basically the same as OP's but with a lifetime warranty. I know, it's the lifetime of the company but they have been making this backpack since 2019.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P1SFHK3

If you are interested in a more traditional laptop backpack for travel, they also make this one for $25.

I've gone on 2 week solo trips (wife refused to go "backpacking") with only a Nike school bag. This will be a huge upgrade. Smilie

I ordered two. I believe they came in a box. They were each individually sealed in plastic. Can't remember if they were folded or not, but I can definitively say that the way they were shipped in no way compromised the bags.

It's pretty great for that with the expander zipped close. It would only lack a padded sleve for the laptop, but maybe you have one. There's also cinch straps to make it smaller.

I bought it specifically to travel without checking a bag, but it has become our go-to weekend trip bag too.
