You need an Android phone for seamless experience. On iPhone you need to use the app to make call. This is usually not a huge problem, but it is a PITA especially if you also use Apple Car play (siri-assisted calls/sms goes through phone's primary number)
Some banks (the only one I have trouble with is Chase.. there maybe others) don't do OTPs with Google Voice number. I just use the actual SIM's number for that.
Because you keep switching your real number to take advantage of new-customer offers all the time (you dont have to, but you do if you want cheapest price), you get assigned random numbers that random people have used to register at all kinds of sites. This usually means lots of spam calls. If you have a Pixel phone (or some other spam call filter), this is easily dealt with, but you need to
I still have a google voice number, but these drawbacks now annoy me enough so google voice is no longer my primary. But if your priority is to save money , there is nothing like Google Voice and taking advantage of those new-customer MVNO deals (I've lost count of Mint/Boost/Redpocket deals I've taken advantage of).

I just bought the unlimited plan at target for $90, got a $60 gift card and when I activated it, my account now says I have 6 months of service (instead of 3).
Alright I'm headed to target based on this comment. Will report back if I get the 3 additional months
Edit- nope, just got the 3 months. Will try and see if CS can get me those 3 extra months. Got the $60 physical target gift card

Just curious if you activated through the website or the mint mobile app? I used the app and used an email address I have never used for mint before.
Since to establish GV you need to have a real SIM number to port it (attach it) to. But once you start jumping the Mint hops getting new numbers every time, you loose the original real number since you stopped paying for it and once in a while Google demands to verify that you still have the original real phone number. That is when you loose the original number (Google cancels your GV number). How do you avoid this inevitable event?
This will happen even quicker when someone gets from another mobile service provider your old actual SIM number that you originally used to establish your GV number and also wants to use it with GV. In this event Google can take your GV number away from you immediately after you could not verify that you still have it.
Not so?
If it is all true, which I think it is, since I have GV since they ever rolled it out, this means only one thing: you always need to keep the original SIM number that you established your GV with and therefore for this all schema to work you must maintain 2 plans in parallel: always to keep your original SIM number with an actual mobile provider and then your GV number is safe to use for jumping Mint hops from one promotion to the other.
In a family situation the math therefore will be: half of the people always have actual SIM phone numbers and they do not change them, and this allows the second part of the family to have GV numbers that Google will not take away, which in tern are used for jumping the Mint hops from promotion to promotion.
I used to have like 4 GV numbers. I lost the all eventually and rather quickly after I closed the other 3 actual SIM numbers when I switched to 1 phone line plan. Since I could only prove to Google that I still have that 1 number out of 4.
Does this explain that this schema will not work without another actual SIM number peer?
I used the app and a new customer as well. If you haven't already bought it, I would recommend stay away from Mint. The network is trash (in LA). Plus their customer service refuses to tell me how long will the port in take. Already been more than 12 hours for me. Read online that it should typically take a few mins or few hours.

Using GV as a bridge to make phone calls to your friends when they always recognize your GV number might be fine, but doing the same and calling some places will not work: some places have verification systems of some sort where they can recognize whether it is a real SIM number or GV, and they either drop your call immediately, or I had cases when it is saying that the number you're calling does not exist (even though calling that number using a real SIM number is just fine). Also many companies (a good example is PayPal) will not even accept your GV number as your phone contact. And so forth. This is all due to a myriad of spammers (a lot of them from overseas) using GV platform for fraud.
So there are caveats that exist in making your "permanent" phone number to act as a bridge for your "temp" Mint number.
Does this kit still work for me?
I am totally new to this. I want to transfer my Tracfone mins+data to another Tracfone I have. Then, I wish to use the compatible Tracfone to use the Mint sim card. Tell me if I am wrong, I first should transfer my Tracfone number to google voice account. Then...I am wondering if you meant to say - create a throw away number and then forward all calls from that number to google voice. ? How does one forward the Mint number to google voice? If google voice is loaded on my cell phone, it will ring just as the other number? Forgive my ignorance, I've basically used Google voice for faxing with Obihai. Thank you.
I'm looking at getting a new Google pixel 8 pro with dual esims and a physical sim. I think I can port my main number to one esim with an unlimited talk and text plan, but with no or minimal data (like $5 a month plan through h20 wireless or hello mobile). Then either use a physical sim to get data deals like the mint ones (or try getting a new line on the extra esim for data and just cancelling the data esim later since I could care less about that number since just used for data. Then for data sim deals I'm always a new customer.
Has anyone done this and/or think this plan would work?
