Holding out for Legion 7i for $1600 new but tempting
I don't think that's happening. All the shills cost money, so the current $2k is probably the best you can expect until next year. It's a decent laptop, but the fake testimonials are obnoxious. None of the prominent laptop reviewers are gushing over it. There's nothing that makes it stand out. Even Jarrod says the main m.2 slot can only take single sided nvme drives. Plenty of compromises with the legion.

From what I can tell, this has a lot of cooling headroom. You can adjust the fans to very quiet and still be in acceptable 80s temp without performance sacrifice. Most extreme modes overclock it and there's huge diminishing returns with the increased power usage and fan noise. Having overkill cooling means your laptop can achieve quieter temps and act more like a normal laptop instead of a screamer.
I mount it vertically (front down) with the lid shut as a desktop replacement. In balanced mode, GPU temps are generally in the 70s/80s, so I'm pretty happy with it. When I had it sitting horizontal like a normal laptop, the temps were much higher (closer to 90).

Super tempting, I wasn't expecting to see a 4080 at this price range. Wondering why I shouldn't just pull the trigger now instead of waiting for cyber monday. I guess the one thing giving me pause is I wish the screen had better color accuracy. I have started getting back into photo editing, so I wondering if I'll regret not going with a laptop with a better screen...

I believe Newegg has a solid return policy through Jan next year in case you change your mind. Also, I believe they will credit if their own price goes lower to save you the hassle of returning/re-buying.

From what I read, the main downside of this laptop is the low quality screen. That's ok with me since I use it as a desktop replacement but obviously important for others.

How about you provide some proof/link?
I've linked the actual spec sheet from MSI' site of this particular model.
Its literally on the link you posted you clown.

This really is a case of MSI shooting themselves in the foot and providing the wrong info to multiple sellers, despite having the correct specs on their own site. This specific model (Vector GP68HX 12VH-006) really does have the 12900HX (I bought it and confirmed it), despite many sites showing 12900H. It was a pleasant surprise.

If that really is the case then MSI is the clown. Although the OP has been caught being a clown on a regular basis.

Interesting that even the promotional images say 12900H though.

I don't buy the user reviews either as they comment on no USB-C when this model clearly has it. Great price on a 4080. Question is whether to take a bird in the hand or to bet for a better model or even a 4090 at a higher but discounted price. Overall, a great deal.

Right; they club reviews for other generations of MSI laptops together unfortunately. Probably not enough reviews for each specific model to show them separately.

Cheapest 4080 laptop so far. Same price at Walmart.
Any downsides? I had a bad experience with the hinges of my MSI laptop.
I have a legion 4080 with a QHD+ 240hz screen. To me the downside is a powerful GPU with a 1080p 144hz panel.. my son's laptop with a 4060 pushes 1080p 144hz perfectly.

Which laptop do you recommend for a kid getting into gaming? Anything in the 500-750 range? I keep falling into the 1200-1400 price point range but think it's likely overkill for him being 12 years old.

So Walmart does list it for $1599 as well and I feel better about their return policy even with 3P sellers based on some problems I've had in getting returns in the past from Newegg directly. I'm interested but on the fence due to the weight and that I want a 4090, but this price at the Newegg site is making it very appealing.

Feel free to add this to your post if you want to Doc, but I don't know if there is a code to bring it down to the same price for this although it is also from NewEgg as a 3P seller.

Not enough info to go on really. What games is he wanting to play? How responsible is he? Does he have a desktop or is this his only Pc? You would expect a laptop to last at least 5-6 years, so if he's 12 now he should be still be using it at 17-18, is it worth skimping the 300-400 bucks now and him wanting to upgrade in 3 years because the budget one is too underpowered?

If you're going to go for a budget gaming laptop then go AMD, something like this:

But eventually you'll likely need to increase the RAM and SSD
