I subscribed for 19$ and it triggered the monthly 15$ credit from Chase reserve, in case someone is wondering.
Doesn't Chase offer 6 months to a year of free Instacart? And/or they give you credits back on the membership cost? Otherwise $4 for a year is pretty slick.

Chase Reserve offered me 12 months of free instacart+ and I have used it already. They also give 15$ credit per month for instacart purchases till July 2024 I guess.

The upcharges are actually set by the store.... around me for example Food Lion does not upcharge at all from in-store pricing, while Publix upcharges a CRAZY amount (and most other chains are somewhere in between)

You can check if a given store upcharges or not this way-

So Food Lion for example says
"Food Lion sets the price of items on the Instacart marketplace. Item prices for this retailer reflect the average in-store prices in your area"

While Publix says
"Publix sets item prices on this platform. Publix delivery, curbside pickup, Publix Liquors, and Publix Quick Picks item prices are higher than item prices in physical store locations. "

How to check-

Quote from Instacart help :
You can view each retailer's pricing policies by looking for the More info pricing link at the top of the retailer's storefront on both the website and in the Instacart app.

In the app—

Go to the main page of the app and select a retailer
Under the retailer's logo at the top, you'll see the pricing policy: "Everyday Store Prices," "View pricing policy," etc. (Policies vary by retailer.)
Tap the pricing policy link, then view Pricing information under Info
On the website—

Go to Instacart.com and select a retailer
Under the retailer's logo at the top, you'll see the pricing policy: "Everyday Store Prices," "View pricing policy," etc. (Policies vary by retailer.)
Click on the pricing policy link, then view Pricing information under Info

I'm a Sprouts buyer as well, and they're the same as in-store prices. Walmart as well. Traditional supermarkets like Vons, Ralphs, Albertsons, etc tend to be wildly upcharged. Costco is about an 11% premium, less if you do it through their same day website. I will say, ordering Costco produce through Instacart saves you the trouble of waiting in the return line if it's bad. I've had deliveries with half a bag of bad strawberries, or wilting lettuce, and they refund the entire amount in credit instantly. I've found that to be a pretty solid perk.

i often get $40 off $80 coupon, but can't find anything worth buying. Prices are inflated, and when including their fees, would cost more than buying directly from stores
With that coupon it doesn't cost more than buying directly if you have plus membership as service fees will be reduced and free shipping . Using the coupon and combining with chase card quarterly credits, you will save a lot. I recently used the coupon on instacart and got legos from Costco and the savings were substantial after coupon and chase credits.

Instacart helped me a lot during the covid. Hate that, I had to stop using their service because of inflated prices and some unknown fees even with the membership.

Do people not understand that you're simply paying for the convenience? It is not supposed to be cheaper than going to the store yourself. I always think it's funny that people complain about the markups / fees. If they did it for cost it wouldn't exist!

These are the best when I combine them with stores that don't have an up charge on prices and allows for local pick up. For example, our local Sprouts grocery store has same in stores prices on Instacart. And if u pick at last one item that says 'free pick up', no pick up charges, usually some brand promotion. Sometimes it a bag of Late July chips for $3-4 or some yogurt. So, $80 of groceries for $40, awesome!
