you need to install Xpenology boot loader on a USB drive, then you can run Synology DSM on a PC, or just install EXSi on a PC and run Xpenology/Synology in a VM
do you mean host an SMB share or NFS export on the Synolgy for your PC to use with Photo software?
No I mean I have the photos in my current NAS that I can share out as nfs share on my network. Point the xpenology to that folder. And use the Synology Photos app with the xpenology. This way xpenology is just a passthrough system.
Edit: All I want is being able to is able to use the Photos app. I bought the 224+ but if I can avoid it, then I rather spend that elsewhere (e.g. hard drives). Already have QNAP NAS. But the photos app suck on QNAP.

no, i believe the photos must reside on the Synology for the Synology app to host them.
But yes you can mount external shares to a Synology (mainly used for data migration)
For those who might care, Amazon is currently showing the following for the DS224+, which is longer than the typical 2 days:

Thanks OP - was keeping on eye on this since 1st SD promo went out a few days ago. B&H photo running same black friday deal. Decided to get from Amazon because of better return policy. Also picked up some RAM since I'll be hosting parallel server apps.
Overall great deal on an awesome box with enough CPU to transcode Plex - which the Syno "J" models are ill equipped for. https://slickdeals.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14605009&stc=1&d=1700748601
Also bought the same 16 GB module[amazon.com] ($25.99) for my DS224+ (from shipped B&H deal). Used it successfully on my DS1520+ when it was $65 at the time (September 4, 2021). It is important that it is dual rank memory.

I did it for years on a number of deferent systems then became tiered of it and just bought a Synology DS220j
Thanks. It sounds like it might be a lot of maintenance. I'm amazed no one has done to NAS what microsoft did to computers and apple for phones. Big mashable buttons that are easy to use for mainstream people. I'd think the majority of the people would want something like this instead of paying a cloud provider monthly, plus the privacy of your own system. Since SD cards are currently absent from newer phones, a personal NAS is a good solution. Plus sharing videos and files securely with friends and family.

Most simply want the simplicity of someone else (e.g. Facebook, Amazon or Google) doing all the heavy lifting, while not being concerned with the associated privacy issues. Hosting your own cloud is certainly not for everyone and as a result, ease of use and maintenance can be daunting.
That said, units like the Synology certainly simplify things, but not everyone enjoys being an admin.

Synology is the closest thing I have seen to making home NAS easy for everyone. I have seen just about every NAS solution you could imagine.

Can you have iPhone and iPad apps backup videos directly to this? For example, my child uses CapCut to make videos and it takes a ton of space. Can I have CapCut save videos directly to this? Thanks
Been running a Syno for 10ish years. Recently jumped on the UnRaid bandwagon using older PC parts… and I'm never going back. It's really good software. My only issue is the parity calculations on file transfers can be slow, but that's likely because my hardware is an older i7 7700k with 16Gb DDR4.
But if you're not ready for a DIY solution, Syno is great. DSM7 made some interesting changes I didn't like (hence the exploring UnRaid) but for a plug and play device, Syno is my 1st choice.

- For Plex users - Few of these (DS224+, QNAP TS-462) support hardware transcoding. Below is the famous link for confirmation.

Note: You need Plex Pass to get advantage of hardware transcoding. Here is the deal for lifetime Plex pass for $90 - https://www.plex.tv/plex-pass/
- Similar to FrontPage deal of Newegg and B&H but here shipping and returns both are free
