You can also sync them with a computer/monitor using the free Hue Sync app. No HDMI box necessary in that scenario. I grabbed these for my daughter's PC to sync with movies and games.

What do people use these as primarily? Just mood lighting type of thing?

If you're willing to pay for the HDMI box, it does a great job of lighting the wall behind your TV in colors that change to reflect the colors on the screen. I didn't think I'd like the effect, but it is pretty awesome.

You can use them as just lighting options if not interested in using it with a sync box with a TV. Saw it used like this past weekend which prompted me to check this thread again. When it was live again, I pulled the trigger.
