Just a heads up: The capacitor that runs in conjunction with the motor relay on these is very hit or miss.

My unit stopped working after about 100 hours of use, but replacing the cap was extremely easy and faster than going through the warranty process.

WEN will send a new control board under warranty, but it seems rather wasteful if you can fix it with a 20 cent part and a cheap soldering kit.

I had on my To Do list to make a DIY version of one of these but for this price and the the quality reviews, I just went ahead and ordered one. Checked an item off my list too. Smilie

Would this be a product to use to create a smoking room? Like in a sunroom or something like that?

Look below at the additional filters you can buy - the carbon ones should remove odors

My brother uses this in his carpentry shop (small basement shop) and he loves it. His use case is mostly sawdust and drywall dust but it works great. I kind of want one for my workshop (garage) but I usually just blow out the dust to the driveway using a leaf blower.

Seems like you could just change the filter type to one with a higher MERV rating to filter out smaller particles, if it takes standard filters.

Depends on what you want to filter out of the air.. Particles vs smells……HEPA filter for particles, Organic Vapor filter for smells. A HEPA filter would go down to 0.3 micron, much smaller particles than what this unit is designed to filter as configured.

Also consider that filtering down to a smaller particle size also will mean that the motor will have to work harder. Now, that could greatly impact the number of air changes per hour that the system is capable of creating. 400 cubic feet per minute of air movement isn't really all that much.

I have the 3417 model.

I have two of these in my shop. Based on how much crap gets into the filters, they definitely work. I know you can make your own but the form factor is so convenient. Nice to have the remote too.

I don't do any wood work, but how would one of these work as a general air filter for a garage? Or would it be better just put a regular air filter in there? I mostly want to use it for keeping dust off my gym equipment, especially my treadmill.

I do the same, but even after blowing out the dust there's always a thin layer of particles that eventually settle on the surface of my tools.

How many sq ft is your garage? Do you plan to run it 24/7? Do you keep the garage door open for extended periods? Do you live in a dusty environment? Another thing to consider is how large the particles that you are trying to filter (dirt, sand, pollen). These systems will filter down to 1 micron, but consider that a HEPA filter on a respirator filters down to 0.3 microns in diameter. To put that into prospective, an human hair is anywhere from 50 to 90 microns in diameter.

All of these things will impact the how well it will work.

Maybe 700 sq ft? I was planning to run it 24/7. I don't keep the garage door open other than to go in and out, so maybe 5 minutes total each day. I don't consider the environment dusty. I think most of the particles are dirt and pollen.
