I was just about to bite on the Kef r3 deal, but $699 for a pair of these might be too difficult to pass up. I know its a strange comparison, but does anyone have thoughts on whether the kef r3 is worth the extra $700?
Hi, I have used both the KEF R3 (non meta) and the Definitive D11, which is the 6.5" based 2-way monitor in this line.
The R3 is indeed a better speaker vs D11 but not by all that much. The R3 has a very 'neutral audiophile' sound with fantastic accuracy to the recording but it is a little buttoned up sounding at times.
Remember recordings are often mixed on speakers that are not neutral, yes many times this is the case. Also many recordings are masted and mixed with the belief they will be played back on home speakers and not necessarily 'accurate' speakers. Some recordings are mixed by people who actually don't really know what they are doing and also the 'loudness' wars have made many recordings best played on less accurate systems. Such recordings can sound boring or downright bad when played back on neutral speakers.

The D11's tweeter didn't quite create the same sense of 'air' that the R3's does and while serviceable didn't quite sound 100% excellent to me. Really though I think most people should go with the better priced item here.

The d15 being a tower will have better bass and most likely play louder, cleanly at the extreme vs both the R3 and the D11 I used.

How big is your space, how loudly do you listen and will you be using subwoofer(s) and will you be using a high pass filter to remove bass from the mains?

I'm using the d17 for six months now…I enjoy them big time in movies and music. But I'm not an expert, just an average Joe.

White????? I don't know whose living room will match with that.
If you don't want the white, just get some black vinyl. You can always remove it, but not all vinyl is quality. I put some on Mom's hood and it peeled up.

I have the BP-6s from 2009 and love them for movies, especially for the price. I'm running them with the Pioneer VSX-23THX. Personally, I didn't care for the Klipsch that much. I got mine for 70% off direct from the manufacturer. I also have a set with the amplified subs I bought used for $225, but one needs a new capacitor, I just haven't used them since I don't have room right now.

Def Tech is known for their built-in active subwoofer design. Anything less will be average performance. Klipsch takes my money with a separate sub

Get speakers with an integrated DAC and amp if not a streamer too. DSP is also nice. As much as these are good speakers, integrated gets better sound for 99% of people with 1% of the work.

Not sure why this comment was negged. I literally came here to ask the same thing lol
Same here. I already have the Triangle Borea BR09s though, so just more curious than anything. Looks like these have built in subs, which the BR09s dont. They sound pretty good as is, but I think you would need to get a sub with them. I purchased the SVS SB-1000 Pro (Sub) and a Cambridge Sound CXA81 to power it all. Pretty happy with it and I think I will have this setup for at least a decade.

these do not have built in subs. the larger units are passive radiators which help to extend low end response, but they are not subs. the main drivers on the front which are 5" drivers act as the woofers.

As mentioned these use 8" passive radiators. This is similar performance to a ported design. So it would be equal to 2, 5.25" woofers in a ported box.
The reason they use 8" radiators is that the radiators need to be able to move about twice as much air as the active drivers or they will bottom out. It is an engineering thing. This nice thing is there is no port chuffing but the design costs a lot more to make using dual radiators vs just using a tuned plastic port.
Part of why they cost a lot full retail.

This is an amazing price for a pair of speakers like these and this price will not last.

I've had the Definitive Tech Mythos 5.1 speaker system for well over 10 years, and they're great. No reason to replace them. This price is amazing and won't last. The only challenge is what you'll add to them for a full 5.1 system. There is a matching center speaker called D5C. It's about $360 right now. Not clear if there are matching surrounds.

Demand D7, they are $200 (if you even want surround in the first place)

Bought a set of white yesterday afternoon. Hopefully they'll work well for my setup in a large room that is basically missing a side wall. After a dozen years I was ready for an upgrade from my Hsu HB-1s which at higher volumes get a bit harsh.

NOT EXPIRED as of this posting (12/1) - deal is still live! Not sure why Slickdeals marked it as such.

I can't seem to get it to show the $599 price
