My parents had the OG white one from 10 years back that still works. I thought I'd buy them an upgrade and bought two last year. One for me and one for my parents. After a month of use, the inside of the top lid already started rusting a bit. I didn't use harsh chemicals or scrubbing and my water is not that hard. It happened to both. They just don't make them like they use to...

I understood the hybrid model is like a thermos and is more energy efficient.

We have one similar to this, made in China model. Most of Zojirushi's non high end are made in China or Thailand. We have insulated bottles and a rice cooker made in Thailand and China and they all have been fine for years so no complaints on build quality, but the made in Japan products tend to be the "better" versions/models with more features.

This model seems to have rust problems though. Ours is a white one and no rust after several years.

We used to have water dispensers and ice makers and due to mold & slime we now microwave our Luke warm water for hot water & use the fridge to make ice.

Bought the Made in Japan version for $176 back in February with a coupon that showed up on Amazon. It has been continually used since day 1. So far, has performed flawlessly. Do note you have to go through a few refills to get rid of a slight aftertaste.

If possible, I recommend getting the Japanese version but the prices for it are all over the place and there's no telling when it will come down again.

Agree with others on getting one that's made in Japan. Mine is still going strong since 2018.

it's not components that rust, it's scale buildup. really depends on how hard your water is but you need to run the descaling mode every so often. I use citric acid, but you can also use lemon juice or vinegar.

Wait for a sale on the Made in Japan Zojirushi. It's worth the wait. Unless you enjoy buying Made in China ones that will stain, rust, or break in a year or two.

I've had both and the Made in Japan one is still working well after 3 years [amazon.com]. My Made in China Zojirushi started to rust spot in a few months.
