They didn't lay off the entire team, they laid off a few hundred out of 5k. Amazon like all other big tech companies have been on a firing spree especially to fund AI initiatives. As we stand now the functionality of the Nest hubs are very limited compared to the Echos. Amazon knows how to hemorrhage money better than anybody, soon to be a monopoly in another sector.

Alexa was Bezo's pet project, now that he's gone they've been shuttering down any new development and moving people to other places. They won't kill alexa, but it's definitely not getting much love from here on out. Biggest focus is getting rid of android on fire TV and using their new OS, smart speakers are probably going to see the biggest improvement from custom LLMs. Amazon is great at hemorrhaging money to make money. Alexa never made money or lived up to the dream of voice orders taking over web orders. It's pretty much as good as dead

Bezos didn't go anywhere just changed his title to "executive chairman" which is a higher position especially given the fact he is still the largest shareholder by a large margin. Just given the history of Google I won't be spending my money just for them to pull the plug on me. Just as of today the functionality and compatibility of Alexa is tiers above. I really hope Google sticks with it because these ads on the Echos devices that pop up are really irksome.
