Correct. The protocol this sends over the cable (HDBaseT) won't be understood by routers and switches. But monoprice makes a few that would work. Just search for "hdmi ip"

I recommend trying to pull a fiber optic hdmi cable instead if you can. Works perfect at full bandwidth, no limitations

These work great. I've been using a different one (av access) for several years for 4k@60Hz, HDR and IR passthrough and have had no issues even with cat5e cable. Make sure you're using good HDMI cables at either end though.

Can these pass thru usb for keyboard mouse etc? Thinking of using a TV hooked up to a media center pc or NAS with hdmi in another room.

HDTbase it's better suited for shorter distances and a single run with no interconnects with the cat cable. Alternatively there is AV over IP stands for "Audio-Visual over Internet Protocol". This protocol is able to be routed through a Network switch. Advantages there can be one transmitter to multiple receivers and existing ethernet network infrastructure can be reutilized.

Due to how multi-broadcast it works with these types of units I would recommend using a VLAN to isolate them from the rest of the network. If the multi-broadcast is improperly implemented it can constantly broadcasting their location to every device on the network. This can cause a small DDOS attack on your own hardware overwhelming the router.

All in all this seems like a great price when the regular seems to be around $175 to 250$ for a 4K equivalent

They also sell a usb extender over cat6 that will do this. You have to have a dedicated ethernet connection for each device but it does work.

Depending on the distance, you might do okay with an active (powered) USB cable. I'm using the 4k HDMI Extender for my monitor along with an active USB 3.0 cable to essentially have a second office in my bedroom. With a USB hub on the end of the long USB cable, I'm running a mouse, keyboard, scanner, and printer. This is the one I got and it's working great: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...VT2D4?th=1
