For what it's worth, I buy my own oil (full synthetic) and filter when I see the oil deals here on Slickdeals. A good Mobil 1 filter at Walmart, or similar deal on eBay and you can make a very economical oil change. I have a local shop that will change my oil for $15 if I provide the oil and filter, no wait or appointment , just pull in and they do it. It would be worth asking around, or even asking a non-franchised quick change place if they will do it if you provide the oil and filter.

...And yet people balk at the price when we do the same for $40 at my shop (with a WIX filter!). Why? Because they all instantly compare prices to the Wal-Mart s-, I mean, pit crew price of $25 for an oil that is absolutely bottom-tier and a sad excuse they call a filter.

Moral of the story? At least try to call a few local shops to see if you can get a better price on your next oil change. Most are probably high, but there are still a few righteous shops out there hanging on for dear life watching while people grossly overpay for the most simple services elsewhere.

Slightly off topic, but IMO with labor prices the way they are now I think it's absolutely still worth changing your own oil if you are able to. I can change the oil in either of my cars with full synthetic (Supertech or Kirkland usually) and an OEM filter for under $25. Takes about 15 minutes if I'm working slowly. Ramps and a catch can will set you back about $60, then you're set for life.

Not an option for everyone to be sure, but it's maintenance almost anyone can handle if they have a place to work and the desire to save some money.

Check Groupon for your local Valvoline. Usually better deal on Groupon. I just did my car for $47.99 with Groupon deal for synthetic.

They use a tiny hose and insert it into the oil fill port all the way down to the oil pan to suck the old oil out.

I didn't like how they suck the oil out. Feels like you can't completely get a good drain. They were able to suck out 4L out of my car but normally I fill 4.2L of new oil. So the sucking device left about .2L in the engine.
I got one of those vacuum things that sucks the oil out through the dipstick. First time I used it, after getting all the oil out I could, I climbed under the car and removed the drain plug to see what was left. Not a single drop came out. This method certainly can remove all the oil if they leave the tube in long enough.

how much is an oil change nowadays?
Not sure what state you guys live in but in California It's roughly $60 pre-tax for a conventional oil change. Had mine done yesterday and would have been $61 but I had a $20 off coupon. The sad thing is they check off all the boxes that they filled your tires with air, washed your windows, and did a bunch of other stuff and the lazy bastards never touch any of it

Even with the coupon it's like 35%+ more than other options, but I still do it happily.

The experience here is phenomenal if you go at the right times. Zero waiting, no magical problems that they want to fix (since they aren't a shop there isn't much incentive to try to "find business" other than the few other barebones preventative maintenance services they offer.

It's really failproof. I confirm that the computer is telling them the right amount of oil, their guns dispense the exact amount, they show you the dipstick before you leave to verify the level. You are in the car watching the entire time.

If you aren't tight on money, it's a great luxury IMO. If money is tight, just do it yourself. But the one thing I would never do again is go anywhere else like a dealer or a shop and jump through the hoops and wait forever for a basic task you can be done with in 10 minutes.

Oil changes vary a lot in price. I had one shop charge me $50 when I brought my own oil and filter (I usually do it myself, but needed a DSG service so I had them do both at the same time). The Firestone down the street advertises $30 "standard" oil changes.

The oil alone for our Audi TDI is like $35-$60/5 quarts if we buy it ourselves. Our Subaru takes the Kirkland Signature stuff which is like $16/5 quarts on sale.

I concur except for the OEM oil filter, Purolator plain and simple
Here we go...

And why, Mr. Purolator, is not only your filter superior, but are you certain you are getting what they are claiming?

How do they make money like this? Their recent report seems doing well

Bah, these guys are no better than any quick lube, but charge dealership prices.
I had my truck done the last time they had this deal, it was still over $130, and that was after declining a lot of high-pressure upsales based on a service schedule not based on the manufacture.

Then after I left I noticed they left oil all over the bottom of my truck, no care at all was given for a clean job, or cleaning afterwards, really a "spill and fill" type job. I complained, and got nothing but they'd talk to the tech. I ended up using a bunch of rags and brake clean to clean up the mess as it was dripping onto my driveway.

Never again... and my wife now understands why I usually DIY it.

Went to a Valvoline shop and they couldn't change the oil on a VW because the drain plug uses a special type of bolt. Instead, they stripped the bolt and oil started leaking.

Would definitely avoid if you have a European car. And oddly enough, I use Valvoline and LiquidMoly oil.
They did this to mine recently and the guy said he couldn't prove he was responsible. I'm thinking I might call corporate because he's true I'm not entirely sure it was him but seemed sketchy.

When they ran this deal back in June, I called my local shop and the price for a change was way too high. They quoted me $129 for my 2013 GS350. Not a great deal at all

My biggest issue with diy oil changes is having to discard the oil somewhere. Which means I have to take it to some place , carry it in the trunk of my car, and drop it off. I don't need or want oily containers in my car. I could wrap them in trash bags, but by the time I get it all done and back home, I could have just gone thru a drive thru oil change or even the dealer. I just put the little extra money into not having to deal with the mess. But other things like brakes I'll do as that's easy and way more cost effective.
Oil changes are the only thing I don't do myself.
