For what it's worth, I buy my own oil (full synthetic) and filter when I see the oil deals here on Slickdeals. A good Mobil 1 filter at Walmart, or similar deal on eBay and you can make a very economical oil change. I have a local shop that will change my oil for $15 if I provide the oil and filter, no wait or appointment , just pull in and they do it. It would be worth asking around, or even asking a non-franchised quick change place if they will do it if you provide the oil and filter.

...And yet people balk at the price when we do the same for $40 at my shop (with a WIX filter!). Why? Because they all instantly compare prices to the Wal-Mart s-, I mean, pit crew price of $25 for an oil that is absolutely bottom-tier and a sad excuse they call a filter.

Moral of the story? At least try to call a few local shops to see if you can get a better price on your next oil change. Most are probably high, but there are still a few righteous shops out there hanging on for dear life watching while people grossly overpay for the most simple services elsewhere.

Slightly off topic, but IMO with labor prices the way they are now I think it's absolutely still worth changing your own oil if you are able to. I can change the oil in either of my cars with full synthetic (Supertech or Kirkland usually) and an OEM filter for under $25. Takes about 15 minutes if I'm working slowly. Ramps and a catch can will set you back about $60, then you're set for life.

Not an option for everyone to be sure, but it's maintenance almost anyone can handle if they have a place to work and the desire to save some money.

I just did my own oil for the first time. Bought Costco brand synthetic oil when it was on sale and bought Mobil 1 filter from amazon. I def felt the difference, the car is running alot smoother.
How did you rise the car to the top? To go underneath it? Noob question sry. Did you have a jack ?

$40 is actually a good price if you are using good oil. Most folks don't care if they lease a car but if you financed it you need to take better care of your car
Yep. Any full synthetic you find on the shelf at Walmart or similar. Even Euro oils. Admittedly that $40 only covers 5 quarts and additional quarts are extra, but at just $5 per quart. It's literally a DIY price. But people rarely use us for oil changes, meanwhile the line at Take 5 down the street is always steady - at over $100 per oil change in many customer reports I hear first-hand.

My biggest issue with diy oil changes is having to discard the oil somewhere. Which means I have to take it to some place , carry it in the trunk of my car, and drop it off. I don't need or want oily containers in my car. I could wrap them in trash bags, but by the time I get it all done and back home, I could have just gone thru a drive thru oil change or even the dealer. I just put the little extra money into not having to deal with the mess. But other things like brakes I'll do as that's easy and way more cost effective.
Oil changes are the only thing I don't do myself.
You do brakes yourself, but not oil. Very weird.

Have you heard of brake cleaner? It works wonders on any oily mess that may be involved. If you have a good sealed container and some brake clean for any residue or drips on the outside, it's impossible to have a messy car...

Agreed. But we've learned over the years word of mouth and reputation spreads faster than anything else. Thankfully oil changes aren't our only scope of work.

They did this to mine recently and the guy said he couldn't prove he was responsible. I'm thinking I might call corporate because he's true I'm not entirely sure it was him but seemed sketchy.
What type of vehicle? If it happened to both of us, I imagine it's probably widespread.

I was genuinely disappointed in the service.

It always ended up an oily mess when I used to do my oil changes and then I had to dispose of the oil and that was the most annoying part.

Brakes aren't that difficult or dirty to do it my self. There is barely any brake dust and easy to clean up.

I never tried to use brake cleaner to clean up excess oil. Hmm maybe I could try it once more. But the dealer charges 45 after tax and fees for an oil change and I get a hot chocolate with an espresso shot, a bear claw, a moment to run thru my calendar and to do list, then a fresh simple wash that will last me 2 weeks before I need to wash it again. So for me I just go to the dealer to get an oil change now.

edit: forgot to mention about having to spend time cleaning up all the oily tools.

They gave me free oil changes with the lease. Looking forward to that coffee machine tomorrow 🤣🤣🤣.

Check your local groupon. Usually mines offers half off on synthetic oil changes.

I get it, if there's all those perks involved, why not. And don't take this the wrong way, it's not meant to be offensive, it's meant to be funny:

Only amateurs get "all the tools" oily.

The coffee is always crap so I just started doing hot chocolate with a shot of espresso and it tastes ok. Gives me the caffine so I'm good 👍.

Haha no offense taken. I was never good at oil changes. I either missed a little or spilled and it always got on my wrench when taking off the drain plug.
Which could be why I hate doing it.

Haha. Now I never said only amateurs spill a little here or there. Let's be real, if it's a windy day anything can happen, including large spillage amounts.

It's not for everyone, positively. But practice makes perfect.

...And treat brake cleaner like duct tape. It can do almost anything!

It can:

clean oil spills
clean transmission fluid spills
clean power steering fluid spills
clean gear oil spills
clean coolant spill residue
...okay it can clean literally almost anything

it can be used as starting fluid in a pinch
it can be used to diagnose oil leaks
it can be used to clean up dirty/dusty engines
the list goes on

But my favorite use is arachnid killer. Soak 'em down, watch 'em scurry, then BOOM. Crispy.

I bought a 3$ walmart supertech filter for my 2007 corolla. Is it that bad to buy something else? I honestly dont care about spending 10 bucks on a filter.
