For what it's worth, I buy my own oil (full synthetic) and filter when I see the oil deals here on Slickdeals. A good Mobil 1 filter at Walmart, or similar deal on eBay and you can make a very economical oil change. I have a local shop that will change my oil for $15 if I provide the oil and filter, no wait or appointment , just pull in and they do it. It would be worth asking around, or even asking a non-franchised quick change place if they will do it if you provide the oil and filter.

...And yet people balk at the price when we do the same for $40 at my shop (with a WIX filter!). Why? Because they all instantly compare prices to the Wal-Mart s-, I mean, pit crew price of $25 for an oil that is absolutely bottom-tier and a sad excuse they call a filter.

Moral of the story? At least try to call a few local shops to see if you can get a better price on your next oil change. Most are probably high, but there are still a few righteous shops out there hanging on for dear life watching while people grossly overpay for the most simple services elsewhere.

Slightly off topic, but IMO with labor prices the way they are now I think it's absolutely still worth changing your own oil if you are able to. I can change the oil in either of my cars with full synthetic (Supertech or Kirkland usually) and an OEM filter for under $25. Takes about 15 minutes if I'm working slowly. Ramps and a catch can will set you back about $60, then you're set for life.

Not an option for everyone to be sure, but it's maintenance almost anyone can handle if they have a place to work and the desire to save some money.

I bought a 3$ walmart supertech filter for my 2007 corolla. Is it that bad to buy something else? I honestly dont care about spending 10 bucks on a filter.
Can you do better? Absolutely. Will it destroy your car? No.

I was referring to the Fram Core filters Walmart's so-called 'techs' use. Those are a huge step down even from a basic Super Tech filter. Source: I'm a tribology geek who cuts filters open for inspection. Second source: BITOG - a tribology geek website for people like me who also cut filters open and share data.

What vacuum thing you have?
my guess something like this. https://www.amazon.com/Mityvac-73...B000JFN9WW

It beats going under the car when it is dead cold and less mess, but once a year I do a total drain from the plug. It is helpful if you oil filter is accessible from the top of the engine, then no need to crawl under at all. I use a Schwaben from ecs tuning.

I just did my own oil for the first time. Bought Costco brand synthetic oil when it was on sale and bought Mobil 1 filter from amazon. I def felt the difference, the car is running alot smoother.
Me too on the Costco and the first time. Used a fram. Did your mileage go down? I lost almost a couple mpg. I thought going from conventional to synthetic would go up instead of down. 2012 Nissan Versa.

My local Valvoline said they only use Valvoline oil but I could bring my own synthetic and they would charge $38

To make it even easier to change oil, get a fumoto valve to replace your drain plug.
This^^ Makes changing oil a snap, and less messy. Drain time is increased a bit, but worth waiting a few more mins.

I bet if you could find a "mom and pop" quick change that isn't a franchise they would do it a bit cheaper and be glad to have your business. Don't be afraid to call around. Just say "if I provide the oil and filter what would you charge for the labor?" More likely than not you'll find a new spot and you never have to hunt retail oil change coupons again!

I've been thinking about trying to do my own. Can you recommend (or tell me what to avoid) ramps or other supplies that make the job easier? Where do you get the supplies?

That's a far different tune than your previous post of "Purolator, plain and simple." You made a recommendation while not recommending OEM (or any other brand), I asked why. Don't contradict yourself and say you "could care less." That's clearly false or you wouldn't have made the recommendation.

I know you weren't asking me, but I've done this for 15 years and worked for all the major shops in my area. Plastic Rhino Ramps are my go-to, and I still have and use my original set. Metal ones suck. I highly recommend the higher weight capacity ramps ("Max") simply because you never know when you'll be doing a heavier duty vehicle and/or you just want the extra safety factor. Even if you are sure you'll never own an Escalade or heavy duty pickup, trust me, you never know in 5-10 years if you'll be doing oil changes for the entire neighborhood/city (I bought mine for my two little cars, 500 cars later I'm glad I bought the higher capacity set).

All you need for drain plugs are 13mm-17mm hand wrenches (use the closed end and don't use ratchet+sockets). For oil filters, I prefer to use band wrenches for all the ones installed by King Kong (aka all lube techs).

The golden rule to remember when using ramps: NEVER align the car to your ramps. Align your ramps to your car. To clarify, never just guess on ramp placement and then just drive up them. Always put the car exactly where you want it and straighten the steering wheel, THEN put your ramps up against your tires (centered and straight with your tires), give the ramps a light kick toward the rear of the car to make sure there is no gap between the tire and the thin edge of the ramps, then drive up without turning your steering wheel. As long as you do this, you'll never mess up.

I use this drain pan.
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com...9017658-p? Pro tip, the spout cap WILL break in short order, but the white caps you commonly find on washer fluid jugs fit perfectly on the threads. Just keep those caps from now on, and you'll never have a problem.

And always, always have at least one full can of brake cleaner on-hand. It is the ultimate mess cleaner.

For the messes on yourself, Gojo Supro Max. Not the orange junk.

Hope this helps.

You're not wrong, but there's also a convenience factor. Yes, you might save a few dollars, but compared to calling around and waiting, are you really saving that much? I like in-and-out services, and some even provide popcorn and coffee. Just don't visit Walmart, buddy.

The genuine motorcraft filter for my clunker is $3.97 on Amazon. Plan and simple would double the cost :-)
