Hi, the D11 uses a 6.5" mid/woofer; these use a 5.25". These would be something like the D9 stacked on top of the dual 5.25" bass woofers.
Most of the midrange roughness in the D11 is most likely from a resonance in the passive radiator.
This is probably not present in the D15 since the design is different & the woofers which drive the passive radiators do not receive frequencies high enough to excite a resonance in the midrange.
Audioholics published very detailed, well acquired, test results for this speaker, the D15. No reason to imagine what they measure like.
https://www.audioholics.com/tower...demand-d15

'upgrading' any driver in these will require reworking the crossover. That will be more important than anything else.

You would need to be able to measure very accurately in multiple ways and understand how to design a complex, driver specific, 3-way passive crossover. This is very difficult to do well even for very advanced hobbyists. Expect to spend significant time and resources and get a lot of help from the forums & books and getting lucky to have any chance of an improvement. Really not saying this in a condescending way, sure it might sound better to you if you slap a beryllium tweeter in there and call it done but yah it really won't be.

If you follow ASR you know even long standing companies like GR research, PartsExpress, and DIY groups using expensive Purifi drivers in custom designs have failed to impress more often than not. Heck loads upon loads of companies from entry to very high end price wise have struggled to pull off an objectively good design, even when factoring in for a wide subjective preference.

Honestly, instead of butchering the D15, I'd recommend you buy some sort of 'PEQ' and learn what can and can't be done tailoring the sound with that(big learning curve but worth it) and play around with it.
Also buy a simple 2-way DIY kit that sounds good but has some notable 'upgrade' paths and spend some time putting it together and then reworking the crossover and driver swapping in that to start to lean what goes into the situation. Who knows someday you may be a designer.

Also taking the 1/4" aluminum face off the D15 to get to the drivers is not for the faint of heart. It will not come off easily. I have taken one off a D9, it was a situation.

No amps on these. Passive radiators only.

Paid ad. You sound like a bot.
This is probably a fair response since I didnt know adorama does paid posts on slickdeals.

However, these are still a great deal for tower speakers of this size (i.e. slim) and quality.

I guess something can be marketed and a good deal? Not every good deal needs to be some uncovered hidden gem?

Can anybody comment on D15+ $300 amp vs. Klipsch The Nines. The cost would be the same for both. I really like the looks for D15. Is it safe to assume 3-way is little better than 2-way speaker?

Did you find The Nines for about $800? Where?

So would that be good, for 2 ch operation: https://slickdeals.net/share/iphone_app/t/17086279
The lowest tier demon with audyssey xt32 is the 3xxx series. Try to find one used. The current version is $1000. Good room equalization software is the biggest audio upgrade you can make in a receiver. Night and day difference.

A lot of question about quality - just fyi to all, these speakers have been release ages ago at this point. They are still amazing, but Def tech is clearly selling old stock so they can release new inventory

I think adorama is def techs clearing house. I bought several of the def tech bipolar towers for like $100 each about 10 yrs ago from a deal posted here.
But by all the published pro reviews, these are easily "worth" this price even though it's really only two 5" woofers and a tweeter, but essentially a built in stand for someone who was looking at $500 bookshelves + stands from another brand. $1000/pr probably should've been msrp.

Bought them when they were $750. McLaren edition. I like them.
If the D15 sound same/close I'd go with D15 for appearance with like WiiM amp.
This is good for me in long term also if I wanna upgrade/swap speakers or amp down the road.
Further, I found out KT9 have only 1 year warranty.

Definitive technology has gone downhill ever since Chet in their service department left. I've had the supercube iii, bp,8000 series and bp9060s. The plate amps on all of them failed and the low end disappeared. They're many threads about this so I'd do some research before pulling the trigger. From what I've gathered, def tech uses cheap capacitorss that fail and put a butt load of glue all over their amp boards. So it's not a matter of "if" they fail, it's more "when" it fails. I've stopped supporting this brand and switched go svs due to their incredible after-sale support. Def tech on the other hand refuses to acknowledge this manufacturer flaw and has done nothing about it. They claim their new "demand" series (DM--) have "redesigned" amps, but I have yet to hear what exactly is different now.
⚠️ Proceed with caution. ⚠️
Speaker doesn't have an amp...

No one said the good deals need to be hidden. But sadly they move the paid ads to the front page before they even have feedback from users.

No it is not safe to assume 3way is better than 2 way.
There are dozens if not hundreds of important factors in every design.

There are many excellent 2ways that generally outperform similar priced 3ways. Even going up in price there is no real simple best.

You also have to quantify in some way what do you mean by better? Agaian there are so many variables you could be looking at.

Output wise they should be similar.
2 5.25" bass woofers in a larger cabinet vs an 8" woofer with active tuning(EQ)

5.25" mids plus tweeter vs using the 8" for the upper mids and using a horn tweeter to cross in lower than the definitive tweeter can.

Pretty similar performance envelope, comes down to your subjective preferences and the looks and of course the price/deal.

Sure but really, who cares?
Open up a deals site and run it on donations. Be my guest.
If it wasn't for the paid stuff and adds this site would not be running at all.
And as the poster said who cares as long as the deal is a legit company & good price.

We've run out of real problems when we resort to complaining about the management of a 100% free website that has probably saved users millions of dollars over the years.

Yea, Chet was great. Try calling now, God forbid you ever need to
I had zero issues calling on about a tweeter replacement for my Demand D9's. A visiting neighbor kid pushed them in. I explained that to Def Techs customer service and they still covered it under warranty. Kudos for great customer service imo...
