If you're in CA - you're allowed to submit what's called a trial by declaration to fight your ticket. Essentially, you submit your version of events to the judge, who notifies the officer to do the same - and then the judge reviews both declarations from you and the officer and makes a final decision.

This works in getting your ticket dismissed more often if you follow a couple of steps. First, make sure you make your traffic stops is not a memorable one for the officer - keys on dash, sunglasses/hat off, hands on wheel, windows down, "good morning/afternoon/night officer... yes officer, no officer," etc... do not fight him/her on anything and just sign for the ticket and go about your day. 2 weeks before your court date - extend your ticket/push court date out (you can initially push it 3 months). 2 weeks before your new court date, CALL the courthouse and make up an excuse why you can't make it for your court date (surprise work trip, family member sick, etc...) The court clerk will ask you what's the next best date for you - try to push it out another 3 months. Now you're 6 months out from your initial court date - start working on your trial by dec. and make sure the court receives it 2 weeks before your court date. Now this extends the process by about another month, as now the judge will ask the officer to respond and will give him/her 30 days to do so. However, so much time has now passed that the cop won't care about sticking it to you/taking the time out of his/her busy day to write a response - you were not a dick, you were not memorable, and it's whatever. So most likely the judge will dismiss your ticket. If the judge does not dismiss and rules in favor of the officer if they did reply - then you have an option to ask for a trial de novo - an in person trial - and you and the officer both have to go in. Hopefully in that case, so much time has now passed that the officer will most likely not show up, and if he does, then judge will rule in their favor and you can ask for a reduced fine/traffic school to reduce the severity of whatever consequence you may face. Lots of info on this online. I've gotten 8 of mine dismissed and 5 of my friends/family members' tickets here in LA county. Good luck!

A speeding ticket will run you $250-300 in fines and then your insurance will shoot up for 3 years too.

Great price for someone looking for the R8. I'm just hunting for the unicorn $350 R7 deal if it ever comes back

Do they still not include a visor mount with this? As expensive as they are you think there would be one rather than just the suction cups that fall off the window all the time.

$350?! Great Scott! Time to go.. Back to the Future for the $129 R7 deal in 2019 😃

Holy Inflation 🤯
I don't think the R7 was ever $129. The DFR7 is an older uniden unit that came before the R-series of units.

Wouldn't an app on your phone serve this purpose better and cheaper? I remember back in the 80s these being useful. But I've had google maps tell me to slow down before coming up to a group clocking people.
You use both, welcome to the future

The DFR7 is not the same as the R7. The DFR is a more basic older tech single horn detector. The R7 / R8 are directional (two horns, essentially double the receivers to capture the freq. Of radar) plus built on newer platforms with better range, filtering for other frequency sources that share the spectrum but aren't police / speed enforcement radar. The R8 is newer with LNA (low noise amplification) added as well as Bluetooth and some other bumps in performance.

No visor mount sadly, they have a better single large suction cup (think GPS style) in addition to the lousy radar detector style. Blend mount is the premium option, but there are universal style ones on amazon called mirror mount

In the market for a radar detector. But can someone please educate me on why someone would get this versus something like a Cobra RAD 480i for $150?
You want to stay with uniden they have changed the game with radar detectors. Their range is much longer and the filtering is much better than most other brands. If you want to stay within that budget look into the uniden R1. It'll serve you well.

If you want to do research look up vortex in YouTube

oh snap. You're right. I confused it with the R4, without the arrows.

Here's a 7 vs 8 article:

Highway radar is a great app, even if you don't use the r8 with it. It's much more useful than Waze.

I actually only use my r8 when I'm on the open highway. The sheer volume of cars with blind spot monitoring trigger k band a lot. I have the filters all turned on, and I'm running the settings suggested on radar busters to quiet it down.

One of the coolest things is that it does work with photo radar, I had a couple of alerts driving somewhere I don't normally go the other day.

This is a great deal. I bought a refurbished unit on eBay a few months ago for $540 with a two year extended warranty.

Mine is hardwired in, with a remote in my tray by the gear shifter. Honestly I use highway radar for all of the muting anyway, in hindsight I wouldn't do the remote mute button.

Highway radar can be used to program the detector. It shows you a map with heat zones of recent enforcement with a risk score, picks up aircraft, and shows their flight path. It's not uncommon to see state police helicopter, Cesna, etc. There's an integration you can leverage to pull Waze data, make submissions, etc.

You definitely want to tune the radar detector to your location. The more you have "on" the slower the processing.
I have found that turning off k was the best thing I ever done to my radar detector. If cops don't use k in your area then that will quiet down the unit to the point where if it goes off then there is a cop.

Any idea how this (or even the 360 max) is compared to escort 9500ix? I think last I read, 2-3 years back, the 9500ix still did quite well compared to the newer stuff.

I feel like I'm still comparing it to like sub $100 detectors, so it seems pretty great, but also could be much better.
I jumped from a 9500ix to an R3 and then the R7 (unicorn 350 deal, otherwise the R3 was great).

The thing that hurts the 9500ix is blind spot monitoring and other false alert sources. There is some newer tech out (MRCD or Multa Radar) but that's limited to where you drive being a concern or not. The newer tech of the R series helps alot with range as well.

The MAX 360 / current Escort lineup which also has arrows is in the similar price range to the Unidens, just gotta research what you like better or sounds like it would be best for you. Vortex radar on YouTube and RD Forum if you want to really go deep.

Not as bad as slow drivers in the left lane. Or the two slow drivers that feel the need to drive the same speed next to each other

Unfortunately k band is the most prevalentb in my state. X band is no longer in use in my state, but neighboring state where my parents live still use it.

My state actually paves hiding areas along the highway for revenuers to sit. With low power K band leveraging instant on, there's little need for them to leverage newer guns. They're also not permitted to use radar in motion in PA.
