I have a cabin and do not have a miter saw there so I installed 1500 square feet of pallet wood on the walls in the basement recently. I used the speed square as a guide for my circular saw, while not a perfect 90 degree angle it's pretty darn close (this is not for fine woodworking and cabinet making where precision is very important.) Thousands of cuts later the speed square is still going straight and being and 8" square this is good for crosscutting a 2X8 piece of lumber.
Last month I used it with a utility knife to score and snap laminate flooring I was installing, so much quicker and cleaner than using a miter saw.
Still using the same Swanson plastic speed square and it sits in a tool box full of heavy tools and has not chipped or broken yet.
