Not trying to be smart but you'll know when you need one. If you have to ask then most likely you don't. I, and many others, have asked the same.

These are dedicated riding computers. You can link speed, cadence, heart rate, power, radar sensors and even a Garmin headlight to read/be controlled by this. It has a long battery life for century/multi century rides. Fastens securely to handlebars. Is compact. A phone battery will drain with GPS on longer rides. Also won't connect to all those sensors. A watch can track and connect with some, but will definitely die on longer rides. These are the main advantages of a cycling computer. This is a great deal on it.

Why would anyone need this? Pretty much anyone I know who cycles has a smart watch or a phone with Strava. Seems redundant.
Not necessary. Would you rather mount a large screen, aka phone, on your handle bar to display whatever matrix that you want to view/track or would you rather mount something a little smaller?

Personally, I'd rather mount something a little smaller like Garmin Edge 540 (or this). Cool

"Supposedly" phones are not as accurate … I'm not so sure you can connect a phone to a power meter/cadence sensor… phones run hot in higher temps and the batteries will drain fast on a log ride on sunny day.

That said phones will work for MOST people… separate unit's are definitely for enthusiasts.

At first glance I thought this was a Palm Pilot...then I realized that I'm 40 and anyone half my age has no clue what that is and that no one would have any use for it. #facts

Great price. This gets up to 20hrs run time. My 130 plus, which is $200msrp, only gets about 8hr. That being said I was able to log a 100mile ride on my 130. The 830 could handle a bikepacking trip or multi day ride.

This is dedicated for cycling that it has advanced training features and can connect to sensors such as power meter pedals, wheel speed sensor, chest strap heart rate sensors, rear radar, ... etc. Also it is light in weight, carries a more durable design, has longer battery life and is more readable under direct sun lights. Anyway, once you invest enough on cycling you may start to find ait useful to have a dedicated bike computer designed optimized for cycling.

Cool.
Noone stops you.

Let me know about battery life with it under the sun (high backlit @ screen for you to see anything) while running all its antennas (GPS + data) to have OK accuracy within a dense grid, or accuracy when running only on GPS outside of grid, or how much your fancy new iPhone's, Galaxy's etc camera(s) will not get their AF and image stabilization mechanical assemblies shaken out of whack (permanently) within a reasonably short time spent mounted rigidly on your handebars.

Phones have their own limitations, and for serious cyclists its is a matter of time before one or more of the above will make them look for something better.

For casually recording your rides on Strava or your fitness tracker of choice, a phone will work, sure. I'd recommend keeping it in a pocket or somewhere with some vibration absorption tho, not on the handlebar. Trust me.

I still have a fully working Edge 800, with good battery life. Can anyone who has upgraded from 800 to 830 confirm it's a big enough upgrade (for the $200)? I already have HR strap, cadence and speed sensors, so I'd be able to use all those on the 830.
