Not trying to be smart but you'll know when you need one. If you have to ask then most likely you don't. I, and many others, have asked the same.

These are dedicated riding computers. You can link speed, cadence, heart rate, power, radar sensors and even a Garmin headlight to read/be controlled by this. It has a long battery life for century/multi century rides. Fastens securely to handlebars. Is compact. A phone battery will drain with GPS on longer rides. Also won't connect to all those sensors. A watch can track and connect with some, but will definitely die on longer rides. These are the main advantages of a cycling computer. This is a great deal on it.

Agreed with previous comments. First of all, this is a fantastic deal! Secondly, these dedicated bike computers are only for those road and mountain bikers who are more than just casual riders. If you're riding 2-3 times per week (and more competitively), you will see great benefits from using a dedicated bike GPS over a phone. Can you ride with a phone? Absolutely, but the data (and let's not forget the active radar you can connect to the GPS) is invaluable when riding a lot.

Maybe this will show the Soandex warriors how to ride single file and out of the middle of the lane.

Why would anyone need this? Pretty much anyone I know who cycles has a smart watch or a phone with Strava. Seems redundant.
ANT+ connectivity, but I'm guessing you do not know what ANT+ is.

On a serious note. your phone is oart of your safety equipment. keep the battery available, so if you did it, it's not dead from using GPS on your phone.

I was thinking of getting something like this but also hesitant as many times rather just ride new trails blindly and pull my phone as needed to find my way home or maybe even don't bring it. But I mean will I have to charge this every ride? Or will it turn itself off and have battery left for next ride? Will it be fine to leave on bike in 23°F like last night? I bought RM Growler 40 on sale ($1300) a few months ago and been Mt biking 3 or 4 days a week even in cold. About to go now and 30°F out so it's been great for me to get exersuze as havent mt biked in years. Trying to keep it simple (and cheap) but at same time tempted. For example I am using my sofir sp35 mounted to bike with hose clamps as light for night rides and working fine ($40) vs getting much more expensive units.

At first glance I thought this was a Palm Pilot...then I realized that I'm 40 and anyone half my age has no clue what that is and that no one would have any use for it. #facts
I wish I never sold my palm vx
Best pda I've ever used.
Long batter life. Stable. Fast. Tons of apps.

Seems like it would be a good purchase for you. You can be more comfortable exploring in cold temps and be able to track your progress.

truly invaluable to have maps of trail systems you are exploring displayed. also nice to see your ride in review on the map on your computer later to see where you can explore more on future rides.

if you ride road you can plan a ride on software like ridewgps then have this thing give you turn by turn directions. game changer.

so many fitness and training options if you go down that rabbit hole.

you COULD theoretically do this with your phone but this makes it all super easy while not really distracting from your bike ride.

this is money well spent for any bikenerd!

I have a Garmin 830. I have tried using it for Navigation but unfortunantly it sucks due to constantly losing its way and saying "off course, turn around" even when I am on the proper route. I read that the newer 840 has corrected this problem with the 830 terrible navigation.
I have turned to using the app RWGPS (Ride with GPS) or Komoot to handle my navigation with mounting my phone on the handlebars. The RWGPS app also can connect Heart rate and the Varia to give me most of the features I used with the Garmin 830.

I was originally going to give a Garmin 830 or 840 as a gift to my son, but instead I gave him a subsciption to RWGPS.

Are you riding centuries through backroads/trails over the course an entire day?
Are you training to increase your performance, with various ANT+ sensors data input?
You likely can benefit from this.

Are you taking a leisurely stroll through town for 30 minutes?
Your phone will be more than enough.

sounds like you have issues w your GPS unit? my 530 has led me through many ridiculous complicated mixed surface routes and does regular road rides very easily. i don't know anyone personally with those routing issues and have a good few friends w garmins.
