Thanks for posting this. Hilton never tells me about these.
I've been diamond for almost 10 years. Close lifetime. Im globalist with Hyatt too. I have intermediate status with IHG and Marriott through cards.

The secret to upgrades with Hilton is to just be nice and know inventory before you arrive incase you need to press gently. Airport hotels with high throughput every day of the year you will probably just get a single upgrade. Other hotels i can get double or triple upgrades. Hyatt on the other hand which are more premium properties on average but a fraction of the properties world wide, im lucky to get an upgrade unless i push hard (and I push very hard if i have to but in a polite manner). CA hyatt centric at Thanksgiving I had to literally remind them I was a globalist and show the inventory on my phone before suddenly they found a suite available.

Hiltons may have a crappy point scheme now but I find more often than not that I get a suite. The loyalty schemes aren't as great as they were 10 years ago but the free breakfasts, lounge access, spa access or just an upgrade make a trip a better experience.

For special stays, I will locate the general manager of the hotel and ask ahead of time for the upgrade. Noting that anyone less than the front desk manager im unlikely to get anywhere. Franchise Hiltons can be hit or miss, usually then finding the manager is more necessary.

If you go to same hotel all the time, form a relationship then even with a lower status it doesn't even matter. Hyatt was upgrading me to suites even before I hit globalist because I came back more than once to a hotel. Know the managers, be nice to the managers, give them a gift in the holidays. Know that non managers are not authorized to do anything- same with car rentals, same at airports.

Btw these Hilton promotions - for over a decade they run back to back. 1 promotion per quarter; when one ends the next one begins. There is always an active promotion. Google them. (E.g. Hilton q4 2023
Promotion) and enroll before you check out (you can even enroll while at the hotel!!). The promotions always get better as year progresses which means q4 is better than q2 for example.
I'm always afraid if I request a digital key, as a diamond member, i may miss the opportunity to get room upgrades, so I prefer to check in and request for upgrade traditionally.

2000 points seems worth around $10 to me
I prefer getting an upgrade than $10

Many complainers on these posts. I typically get 4-5000 points per 1 night stay as a diamond member. Most recently:

Diamond Elite 100% Bonus
1,408
Multiply Your Points Promotion
1,408
Base Points
1,408

for a $154 stay after taxes and I also had a $20 meal credit at the Hilton garden inn, which I can use the credit for tips, typically. If I'm staying at an interstate Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton or similar I can usually find a place to stay for 30k points or so. So for 5 or 6 nights that my work pays for I can get a free night. Like everything on here you can find deals an redemptions that make sense for the individual.

Yes, reward programs aren't as good as they used to be, but they are really just a marketing ploy for the company. Make the most of them or come here to complain and not help. If you think it's that bad of a deal don't go through all of the effort of clicking a link to sign up. I have 2.6 million Hilton points and earn them way faster than I can spend.
Don't forget the additional points through the credit card. Granted any credit card will have cash back, but I like the 12x Hilton points from my Surpass card.

I've never gotten upgraded in my life. Do you just request it, "Can I get a free upgrade please?" Confused
I have been upgraded automatically most of the time. Bangkok - corner room with big windows and great view of river. Prague was amazing - not only upgraded the location to a better location, they gave an executive room upgrade in the new location. They checked with me on location. Jersey city - booked an ordinary room with points - upgraded to a high floor city view room.

Even in Waldorf, if I didn't ask, they will not offer it to me. Maybe it is a new staff? Maybe I didn't tip? Maybe I always travel in high seasons most of the time like summer breaks or winter breaks? - Who knows

This is what I feel, Hilton properties seems to prefer people pay for the upgrade despite the tier status.
that is why in most Hilton properties I was in, I was not greeted as a diamond member or anything.

In most Hyatt properties, I always greeted even as a "discoverist" member and sometimes they do ask me if I want to utilize their late checkout etc.

I feel much appreciated as a Hyatt discoverist member than Hilton Diamond, albeit from Hilton Aspire card.

$10 isn't much but it's something and I have a trip planned where I usually stay a Hampton Inn so I'll take it. What is considered a "stay"? I plan on staying at a hotel for a week. Do I get 500 points per day (max 2000) or do I get 500 pts for each check-in / check-out?

A stay is a check in, regardless of how many days. If you check into 1 hotel and stay 3 days, that is 1 stay. 1 hotel 1 night 1 stay. You also have to switch properties if you are considering checking out and checking back in to the same property. To get 2 stays over the span of 2 nights you would need to check into 2 separate properties, but you could check back into hotel 1 on the 3rd night to get another stay. Make sense?

I travel a lot for business and if I'm short on stays I'll bounce around from hotel to hotel just to get more stays.

I understand - thanks. Do you happen to have the link on hilton's site that documents this?

Pretty much. I generally stay in the NE, but I always politely ask. It's about 50/50.
Best was at the Cambridge DoubleTree, got the Presidential Suite for 4 nights. It's bigger than most apartments I've lived in.

It's no longer an Hilton property, but got a nice upgrade at an all inclusive in Puerto Vallarta for two weeks. Put us on the newer, adults only side of the resort.

"A "stay" is defined as the total number of consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, whether or not a guest checks out and checks back in again."

How do you check the Hilton inventory?
