While the download and upload speeds are competitive to wired internet as long as you are near a strong tower (i.e. urban markets) the latency is bad enough to impact things like online gaming. That and while these 5G are a little bit cheaper, for many, it's not cheaper/faster/better enough to hit mass adoption.
So if you are T-Mobile or Verizon and just sunk BILLIONS into a spectrum/coverage race, you would start incentivizing more and more to hit those numbers you promised shareholders. And hope that people won't change back after the incentives. It's not a coincidence these deals began in the summer and ramped up toward EOY.
Which weirdly enough is a rare consumer win. For some markets there's an actual viable competitor to their wired ISP, and some nice incentives to boot.
