Epic is known to be very "anti consumer" despite the entire attempt to paint Apple in the same light. Epic even lost a major recent lawsuit for deceptive store tactics in fortnite.
Not to mention that China (Tencent) owns one of the largest corporate holdings of the company. It just adds to the distrust.
That's assuming they do not look at it in the shop or that the filter doesn't reset each time you open their launcher.
It's unfortunate Epic doesn't have a "gift" option like steam.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's not going to happen. Epic is eating the cost of the coupon to get people to buy on their store instead.
If that's a feature you enjoy and have the few extra bucks of disposable income then IMO it's worth buying where you get the best experience. It may be "just a launcher" for some people, but Valve does a lot for gaming on PC as a whole. Big Screen mode like you said, controller support, Steam Workshop for simple mod integration, active Linux development support to make a viable alternative to Windows/Mac… there's not even a choice for me where to buy.
Valve ain't a group of saints to be sure, shoot they're not even "good." Yet in many ways they're still the better option.
Many people like to overestimate the power of the steam deck. It really does not live up to expectations if you're targeting AAA games.
At ~1.6 tflops, the deck is about as powerful as PS4 (~1.8 tflops) or Xbox one (~1.4 tflops)
