We run ours year round and they last about 2 years. None have been this brand, but they all seem to be the same thing, just rebranded.

Our current one won't die just yet, it's a fighter, but it's starting to make noise, will make ice regardless of water level (it makes tiny contact lens size ice if low), and the lid falls off lol.

Even though it works, this is a good enough price to keep it as a backup until the other one finally stops working.

Our fridge has the ability to make ice, but we prefer these ice machines because we can easily use water that's gone through our Berkey filter first. ✌️

I bought one yesterday at Walmart inside the store. I didn't check over here when I bought it. My brother always wanted one of those. We had one of those many years ago. We bought it from Best Buy. It was under the name Insignia.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned this, but in areas of hard water (I'm looking at you, SoCal), the refrigerator ice maker makes very cloudy, sometimes smelly ice. I use DISTILLED water in my little countertop ice maker, and now I'm known around the condo complex as the guy with the beautiful ice.

Seriously, get one of these and use distilled water and you'll thank me later. The look of clear ice in an old fashioned just adds to the enjoyment.

I was on the verge of hooking up an ice maker in our refrigerator, until my Aunt had a leak in hers.

But she didn't notice right away, and the slow drip behind the refrigerator rotted out the floor. Had to rip out the whole kitchen, the whole floor, bring in mold mitigation specialists.

I don't know the total bill, but it was well above $10K to fix it. It scared me off of using an ice maker in the refrigerator, and I've been looking at these ever since.

You could route your water line to a direct line from a 5 stage filter instead, for most refrigerators. This is how we set it up, that way you avoid the overpriced (and inefficient) internal filter. You end up with better tasting water as well from the 5 stage RO. Only hassle is running the line from the filter to the fridge (had to go through cabinets in my case). But well worth it in the long run.

Good point, but that's for owners .unfortunately I'm renting so can't do nothing about

I think all these countertop ice makers are the same: problematic. You are going to have trouble with them one way or another. We have one now that is giving us trouble now but with a little internal cleaning it's still running, 4 years later. We have to turn it on and turn it off a few times to get it to kick in.

I set a deal alert for an "ice maker" and guess what, .... still no alert. Damn SD!

My guess is they are referring to being on Walmart's naughty returner list for returning frequently or returning expensive items. Paying in cash might circumvent any store record keeping that would trigger this, but I am not sure and might not apply to all locales (e.g., some states might ask for ID anyway for any over $50 returns).
