I was curious about this and bought. Using for a couple of month, was debating if I should return it but didn't. The only plus is the unique taste from the past. I used to pop on stove for that, and it is easier with this machine. BUT, it triggers my smoke alarm every time, may be prevented with smoke screen. The worst part, it pushes out unpopped kernels out and half of it ends up not popping. I mitigated that problem by placing a metal smoke screen between the cap and the housing and remove it once popped kernels start accumulating. Plus, it is impossible to clean the housing because nothing comes off besides the cap. Tried their butter recipe ones, and it is covered with butter ever since. On top, the metal housing either started corroding at the bottom or covered in carbon. Looks like should have returned it but it still lingers in my kitchen. We only exchange regretful glances every time I enter my kitchen but it won't magically go to landfill by itself, where it should go.

I heavily researched how to make authentic movie theater popcorn several years ago. My wife and I were even going to invest in a commercial popcorn maker at a restaurant auction because we love the popcorn at our Cinemark and Regal theaters. Then we saw the test kitchen episode where they said the Whirlypop was the best home popcorn maker without buying a commercial machine. I actually went to our Cinemark theater and asked the employee what products they used. She showed me the whole operation. They use 50lb bags of Pop Weaver Gold popcorn kernels. For the cooking oil, they used LouAna premium colored popcorn oil(a blend of coconut and corn oil, with butter flavoring and color added), it comes in a 50lb drum/container, but she said they used to use the 1 gallon containers of the LouAna classic popping oil, but they switched to the 50lb drums to save money. They also use Flavacol popcorn salt. For the butter topping, they used LouAna butter flavored oil, it came in gallon jugs(this is what Regal uses too, but a different brand), which they poured into the butter dispenser. The dispenser also warms the oil, so it pumps out easily.

For home ratio, we followed the Reddit recommendations using the exact same products, but I bought the 1 gallon LouAna classic popcorn oil instead of the 50lb drum. Also we did buy the Pop Weaver kernels but I found the 12 pound bags instead of the 50lb bag.

So our recipe for home use is:
1/2 cup popcorn kernels
3 tablespoons of the LouAna classic popcorn oil
1 teaspoon of Flavacol
All that goes into the Whirlypop and you cook the popcorn. Then as soon as it's done, dump it into bowls and add in the LouAna butter flavored oil to taste.

For the butter oil, I use a condiment bottle, like the ones you buy a Walmart for a dollar or 2. The ones you normally put ketchup and mustard in for a party. I find they are great at dispensing the butter oil, instead of having to pour it onto the popcorn from the gallon jug.

This recipe taste exactly like Cinemark popcorn. We can't tell the difference whatsoever.

Common misconception that all metals reflect microwaves. They do not. Aluminum does, so you get sparks. Staples are made from steel (usually coated in zinc plating), which doesn't reflect microwaves, so they're safe to use. If you look close at tea bags you'll notice little staples, and people brew tea in the microwave.

I bought a Whirley when I first started to home roast coffee but yeah it can pop popcorn too. it's not as convenient as microwave popcorn but healthier and tastier for sure.

Most people who use air poppers pour butter over the popcorn and get soggy/chewy corn. They could use less butter if they popped over the stove with ghee, and get an even distribution of flavor.

Technically you can just put your kernels inside a regular small paper bag, fold the top down a few times and pop your own bags. I had an air popper and it was one of my favorite healthy snacks. You can get different types of popping corn, you'd be surprised at how sweet some can be without any additives.

I got this generic air-pop popcorn maker from Walmart. It was $20 regular price and even though it looks like the Costco one my experience has been nothing like the person above. I've only used it twice but the popcorn hasn't burnt, the machine was easy to clean, and almost all of the kernels have popped. My kids love the popcorn.
