Well they are nearfield monitors, meaning they mainly focus the sound right in front of the speakers.

Personally I use these as outdoor speakers for just me and the Misses. It's great because the volume can get relatively significant for us sitting in the path of the speakers, but if I walk to the left or right of my yard the sound volume drops significantly. That's good if you don't want to annoy your neighbors. Not so good if you are the type who wants the neighborhood to feel your vibes. Not to say you're neighbors won't hear them, they can play decently loud.

Regarding sound quality, it's very good, relatively speaking. It's a warmer non-fatiguing sound that is clean and enjoyable. It's also forgiving for lower quality source material. For the record I don't use the bluetooth and plug my phone directly into the speakers for the best sound and I use Youtube music. So they will sound even better with high res such as tidal.

Overall definitely a good bang for the buck.

Haha. Nah, they are actually good speakers for the money. I'm 51 and have been big into audio for decades. I have been on all the forums, and spent countless thousands of dollars on Amps, receivers, speakers, interconnects, etc. In my house right now I probably have more audio equipment than Best Buy, lol. my computer speakers are JBL LSR305 and 308's which are certainly better "studio monitors" than these Edifiers, but again, for the money these edifier's are great, with a very pleasing sound for casual listening.

The funny thing is that the 's' in this model stands for subwoofer, as in the subwoofer output on the back of the speaker meant obviously to hook up to a powered subwoofer.

Yes. This is the "S" model. You won't get fancy crossover thresholds, etc. but you'll get more boom.

I purchased these and was really pretty pleased with the sound. I then got a pair of JBL 305s because they were used, like new on Amazon for $75/each. This was my first interaction with studio monitors. (And also why I didn't realize at first I needed more cables and a DAC, so $150 total turned into $250 quickly).

Massive difference. Not good or bad, per se - different for sure. The Edifiers have the low end punch you'd expect, the kind you can feel. Controls on the side are super helpful. I think if you're a casual music listener, you'll be thrilled with this set. Particularly for a PC.

The studios just can present so much "more". The middle is just more present and you can hear things these won't give you. On THE downside (for some) - you don't get the thump. The lows are clearly represented but bass is not "punchy".

I share all of this just because it was my recent adventure into " hi fi" and hope it helps someone else. I know it's slightly off topic, but would've been helpful for me to see on the last deal. I decided to keep the JBLs but they're a lot more effort (and effectively 2x the cost, even used).

I got these of SD for $90 a while back. Really like them. I got a cheap monoprice sub and use it in my garage. It's a e car and with the sub sounds so much better. Good combo.

Heads up about these speakers - I can confirm what others have said on reddit. The sub-out port provides a very weak sub-out signal. Bought these last week on sale for $119 from Edifier's website. I hooked up two different active subs (Monoprice 8" and Dayton 10") and had to set the gain on both subs to max to get a just okay amount of bump. I found grabbing speaker wire from a drawer and wiring to the active subs' high-line inputs made the subs sound a bit louder. The r1280dbs speakers still sound very good. Lots of inputs. But if connecting an active sub is important to you, there might be better options.

The model without "s" was on sale on Amazon during the black Friday. I bought a pair and they sounded terrible. I don't expect the "s" would make a huge difference.

I had a set of Edifiers a few years ago. They were definitely nice speaks for entry level prices but I wanted more bass than the stereo system could provide so I bought a set of those Jamos with Atmos and dedicated sub. Budget prices for decent stuff.

i have those and i use them in my bedroom, really great and I love them a lot. many say it can use a sub but they are punchy enough and very loud with distortion.
I dislike the the remote range as it wont work if you dont point it directly

I use these as PC desk speakers. They sound much better than small sound bars that I have tried.

Not just that, there's no way to even hook one up, let alone drive it.
They have a sub out. I'm listening to them right now with a sub

Interesting, I have the opposite experience. I do not have this problem. My sub is turned almost all the way down and still cranks.

Would these "sound" or work better than a soundbar? They look awesome. I have seen them in sd a little bit ago. I assume the optical plugs into one speaker. How would the other speaker connect?

Ah-I see a "left out" for speaker wire to connect to other speaker.
A soundbar is really the worst thing lol.. these will sound way better..

That's exactly what it's there for.

Edit: I just saw the post above about a weak sub out signal. If you're looking for a powered speaker pair with a subwoofer connection, you might want to look elsewhere.

I returned mine, and regular disconnects with bluetooth. Sounds were good when worked, and as TV speakers via optical, it didn't even work.

Is this because of weak sub response or no equalization?
