Well they are nearfield monitors, meaning they mainly focus the sound right in front of the speakers.

Personally I use these as outdoor speakers for just me and the Misses. It's great because the volume can get relatively significant for us sitting in the path of the speakers, but if I walk to the left or right of my yard the sound volume drops significantly. That's good if you don't want to annoy your neighbors. Not so good if you are the type who wants the neighborhood to feel your vibes. Not to say you're neighbors won't hear them, they can play decently loud.

Regarding sound quality, it's very good, relatively speaking. It's a warmer non-fatiguing sound that is clean and enjoyable. It's also forgiving for lower quality source material. For the record I don't use the bluetooth and plug my phone directly into the speakers for the best sound and I use Youtube music. So they will sound even better with high res such as tidal.

Overall definitely a good bang for the buck.
Haha. Nah, they are actually good speakers for the money. I'm 51 and have been big into audio for decades. I have been on all the forums, and spent countless thousands of dollars on Amps, receivers, speakers, interconnects, etc. In my house right now I probably have more audio equipment than Best Buy, lol. my computer speakers are JBL LSR305 and 308's which are certainly better "studio monitors" than these Edifiers, but again, for the money these edifier's are great, with a very pleasing sound for casual listening.
The funny thing is that the 's' in this model stands for subwoofer, as in the subwoofer output on the back of the speaker meant obviously to hook up to a powered subwoofer.

If you have $530, get the $150 Triangle speaker deal and the $380 Denon receiver deal. Trust me.

How do these compare to the R1700BTs? Is it with paying $13 more for the larger output?

Deal of the day: Edifier R1700BT Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers - Active Near-Field Studio Monitors - Powered Speakers 2.0 Setup Wooden Enclosure - 66w RMS https://a.co/d/7zvgGg5

I got my son the R1280DBs a few years ago and I just got myself the R1700BTs. We both think the R1700BTs' sound better. They're both good speakers at a great price. I do have a sub just to help the lower end and a Wiim pro plus to stream instead of the Bluetooth.

Is this because of weak sub response or no equalization?
Neither. It just sounds like too low of a subout signal. At least that's what the reports sound like, and it's forcing people to turn up the gain knobs on their subs.

A powered speaker for this low of a price isn't going to have equalization.

You'd have to have space for the Denon, though. Someone who wants a desktop setup might not have the room. There are options for smaller 2 channel amps, though.

How's your experience using them as TV speakers? Maybe I got a bad one.
Very good to be honest. It even fixed my bad TV audio quality, if something maybe would like a little bit more of loudness (but I live in a noisy area).
