You could but only with a complicated setup. One speaker is powered and contains the amp for both speakers. The second speaker is passive and it's powered by the amp in the first speaker. In order to use these as surround speakers, receiving a signal from an AVR, you would need to have pre-out (non powered signal output) surround channels from your receiver OR use a high-to-low level converter.

Given the nature of the question, I'm just going to assume (without judgment or condescending tone intended) that you do not have an AVR with surround pre outs. Furthermore, I just don't like the idea of using high-to-low level converters for this purpose but it can absolutely work as I have done it before myself.

All of that being said, you would be far better off finding a pair of used, well reviewed bookshelf speakers that match the rest of your setup to use for your surrounds

the right speaker contains the built in amp. It sends a amplified signal to the left speaker. The inputs are line level inputs. How would you connect an external amp to them?

I guess you could buy two sets of these and just use the unpowered left speaker with an amp. That seems an expensive way to go though

How this is compared to the Yamaha NS-AW150 for $50?

Completely different. Apples to oranges comparison. These are powered bookshelf speakers. The Yamaha you linked are passive outdoor speakers that would require an external power/signal source to function.

Can this be used as a party speaker for a violinist or a singer?

Its like comparing a Ford F-150 to a pair of Crocs.

Not even remotely used for the same purpose.

I was going to mention that model you have as well... It's currently on sale for $28 more than these:

https://slickdeals.net/f/17165743-edifier-r1280dbs-active-bluetooth-wireless-studio-monitor-speaker-wood-or-black-112-free-shipping

Adding a bunch more features like optical and coaxial inputs, sub out and Bluetooth.
These seem like better value. I've been eyeing the Logitech z623 that come with a subwoofer for $149.99. I like the atheistic of these more. I wonder if I can find a subwoofer for these. How do these compare?

This offer matches the previous Front Page deal that earned 52+ thumbs up.
Except no white speaker, which is the most popular one.

I have these as my speakers for a dedicated turntable station. They are paired with a Fluance RT85 and a Fosi audio mini tube pre-amp. They sound amazing for vinyl. Not real bass heavy if that's what your looking for. Bright tight treble and vocals, which is softened by the tube Amp. I also got quality audio cable from Worlds Best Cable. Definite discernable sound quality improvement with these. Yes, there is no stop on the volume knob, but isn't that big of a deal for me. I listened to a couple of different similar speakers and to me these sounded best. This whole setup really sounds great after around 50 hours of break-in time.

I've had a pair of these as my PC speakers for a couple years now; they sound really good. I have a second pair at the fireplace sitting area and use them to stream music from my phone via bluetooth when relaxing with a scotch. Again, they sound really good (for the price and functionality). They are also really easy to take with when we rent an Air BnB for music while socializing on the patio, etc. Big thumbs up on these.

Or get what seems to be the passive version of these (Edifier P12 - $99 on Amazon [amazon.com], albeit not on sale).
