You could but only with a complicated setup. One speaker is powered and contains the amp for both speakers. The second speaker is passive and it's powered by the amp in the first speaker. In order to use these as surround speakers, receiving a signal from an AVR, you would need to have pre-out (non powered signal output) surround channels from your receiver OR use a high-to-low level converter.

Given the nature of the question, I'm just going to assume (without judgment or condescending tone intended) that you do not have an AVR with surround pre outs. Furthermore, I just don't like the idea of using high-to-low level converters for this purpose but it can absolutely work as I have done it before myself.

All of that being said, you would be far better off finding a pair of used, well reviewed bookshelf speakers that match the rest of your setup to use for your surrounds

the right speaker contains the built in amp. It sends a amplified signal to the left speaker. The inputs are line level inputs. How would you connect an external amp to them?

I guess you could buy two sets of these and just use the unpowered left speaker with an amp. That seems an expensive way to go though

I can't speak for the R1280T model, but I have R1280DBs speakers for my PC (along with tilt speaker stands and isolation pads) and they've been fantastic. Owned for about 1 1/2 years so far, no issues. Also note that these are powered speakers, so no mucking about having to prep wires and banana clips, and no needing an AV receiver.

For the set that you have, do they auto drop the volume after a period of not being used. I only ask as the volume knob does not have an indicator of position. I would like to set and forget and not have to keep adjusting the volume.

Are you planning to use Bluetooth feature thinking you wouldn't have to run wires across.

It's not a suitable use case for your surround. There are better configuration options to be had for home theaters.

I was going to mention that model you have as well... It's currently on sale for $28 more than these:

Adding a bunch more features like optical and coaxial inputs, sub out and Bluetooth.

How this is compared to the Yamaha NS-AW150 for $50?

On the r1280dbs the volume stays the same. Even when you power it off to standby and power it back on it. It only resets back to default if the power has been cut completely, like pulling the cord or a power outage.
