For those wondering, $3/booster pack for any SV set is about as low as it gets.

Unless you get a Booster Box (36 packs), but those cost ~$100 at the lowest.

Even an ETB which comes w/ 9 boosters don't go lower than $35, so ~$3.88/booster.

Get yourself some nice protection, vault x makes very nice leather bound binders with side loading pages. Less than 30 bucks to store 480 cards.

Also, I use a cataloging app called Ditto Dex. it pulls data from TCG player so you always see market prices on cards in a nice way to display your collecting on the go.

Just curious for those that are buying...do you play, collect, or both? I did both starting about 25 years ago starting with the base and jungle sets but quit after either the Gym Leader set or Team Rocket set (whichever was later). Won a few local tourneys , collected a bunch of early 1st Editions, and really enjoyed my time in the scene. I'm totally out of the loop now though. I know that folks get cards graded and that's probably the direction that I need to go. That leads me to another question...what do you see for the future in terms of the TCG? Do you expect the newer releases of the past couple years to gather value? Curious to see where people are at, what they anticipate/expect down the line, and/or whatever thoughts people have to share.

Would love to know this as well since I hadn't bought packs since the fossil set until the new 151 set came out and nostalgia (and expendable income) took over. Now I'm addicted again to the rush of opening packs! But I have no idea what to do with the cards after I open them lol

I just collect, but I do think you will see the value rise on most of these sets. Just look at Evolving Skies which came out in '21 and has a ton of really valuable cards. 151 is similar with how much value the Charizard, Blastoise, and Venasaur lines will hold going forward. The art work on the cards these days is pretty insane so even if you don't have a lot of money you can grab a lot of really cool looking cards for cheap if that's your thing. If you want to compete but don't want to euin the value of your cards the Pokemon TCG on OC and Mobile can still scratch that itch for you and you get a pack to rip on your profile with every lack you buy. So, it really caters to every kind of collector/player these days.

My kids literally just got into Pokemon. 2 weeks ago. I figure easier to have a few cards than tons of toys to clean up for Xmas. I bought like 6 of each and they came today. Most of the cards are all bent lol. Is there really value in these

My wife and I tested the waters with completing Fossil. Our interest in Pokemon exploded, we started collecting master sets starting with the wizards of the coast sets, and we have dipped into modern a little bit. we are upto 4,500 unique cards in less than 12 months. We have had a blast checking out our local card stores and sorting through bulk or picking up missing holos. My advice is to dip into what interests you and go from there. Do not buy anything based on hype or if it is genuinely not something you want. My personal opinion is that the old wizards of the coast cards will retain their value into the future, they have already proved the will with the surge in 2020. Enjoy and have fun with it.

BTW, these scarlet and violet sets may not do it for you because pokemon is now up to 1000 different pokemon and these new ones are mostly uninspired and forgettable. However, scarlet and violet 151 is simply the first 151 pokemon (Kanto) and has been a lot of fun opening and collecting. Could be a good place to test the waters on product you can buy off the shelf.

Yes and no. I also started collecting when the TCG first came out, but at that time most people did not take care of their cards. This scarcity has led the older cards to grow exponentially in value (also the fact they can no longer be obtained) as Pokemon is a popular franchise still and new people continue to get into the hobby. This is one of those TCG where the hobby both caters to people that play the game and collect. Very few other TCG have both markets. As for the newer sets, people are more inclined to take care of their cards unlike before. Staples to players that play the TCG and build decks have a "common" version and multiple "rare" versions that have better art and better foils. People would use the common versions in their decks, but keep the holo or rarer versions protected so this market is contained to how much the Pokemon company decides to print. Card prices do still increase in price over time of the rare wanted "chase" cards, but I don't believe we will see astronomical value like that of the vintage sets.

I mainly collect. Got into it after 20 yrs away once the 151 set came out because of nostalgia. Getting other cards now too bc the artwork on them is just stunning.

For 151 I got the ETB (9 packs), Binder collection (4 + awesome binder), a tin (2 packs) then the premium collection (16 packs). Lots of fun opening the first 15 packs, but after that was less fun due to all the doubles and bulk. Opening a pack with not a single new card isn't a great feeling

Did YouTube digging, talking to card shop folks, and learned the pro tip is to buy a few boosters at first (10-20) for the fun but after just buy singles of cards you like. Either from local card shops or TCGPlayer.com. Spend WAY less money and will always get stuff you actually want or like

And like another poster said, going to a card shop and digging thru their bulk or $1, $2, $3-$4 boxes is actually really fun. Similar thrill to booster pack opening since u don't know what you'll find, but without all the wasted money

Did both when sets first came out and phased out during Rocket. Played in Sanctioned DCI tournaments, online (through IRC), etc..

Modern sets are nice but I would never spend more than $3/booster pack. If you want to start collecting sets best to maybe buy a bunch in them beginning then go after singles.

My kids are getting around the age where they're understanding what they're reading. So I'm teaching them how to play and have them try the tournament scene if they're interested.

Regarding value, I don't think it'll hold compared to vintage sets. It depends on how The Pokemon Company and kids of this generation think of it.

Collecting on and off over the years and it has its ups and downs. I think Pokemon will be here a while thanks to the collector's. If people decide to want to jump into the game it's easily accessible and the TCG community is generally friendly.

In the end collect what you like, don't jump in the thinking you're going to make bank with modern sets.

Plenty of Pokemon - Lorcana proves to be hit or miss though.

I started picking these up bc of my brother. He showed me the chase for Charizard and some other artwork that are pretty cool. Mind you, I only kinda remember the 151 so a lot of the ones I got was over my head. A lot for it was nostalgia on opening packs. If you're a serious then getting the full arts and grading them might be a good to add to a collection.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between Pokémon Go booster packs and the Scarlett & Violet booster packs? Are there any "better" cards in one versus the other? Same question about Scarlett & Violet vs Paldea Evolved and Obsidian Flames.

While we're at, do these come with V or V Max cards? My son is always looking for those (and are they more valuable than other cards?). TIA!
