It would help if you identified which Edifier speaker rather than just listing a brand, but yeah you could probably tell a little difference.

Edifier are very good budget speakers, but they aren't high end construction. They don't have thick non-resonant front baffles like higher end bookshelves.

Edifier doesn't bother to publish the sensitivity of their speakers. The Borea is 89dB sensitivity which is pretty average. It is neither super efficient with power or power hungry.

At 130mm the woofer in these is about 5" while most Edifiers around this price are 4" woofers. If we talk about the Edifier MR4, it's frequency response is stated down to 60Hz while these get about 10Hz lower. Triangle tells us this is at a -3dB measurement. Edifier doesn't tell us, so it could be at some non-standard -6dB rolloff.

A lot of the Edifiers in this price range are using 1/2" tweeters while this is using a 1" tweeter. Both have pros and cons. A 1" tweeter is going to be able to be crossed over to play relatively lower frequency. Smaller tweeters often offer good dispersion.

The Edifier 1280DBs has an optical input, subwoofer output, Bluetooth, and remote which makes it an easy option for a TV.

Edifiers in this price range are often powered. These are not which makes the real cost much higher.

It's not stupid, but you'd need a receiver of some sort. These are not powered speakers. The Edifier 1280DBs is currently on sale, and it's the easiest option I know of to get a decent stereo setup on a TV.

I have owned both of these speakers before.

I would say the ELAC Uni-fi UB5 is the more refined sounding speaker. It sounds more neutral/flat. The imaging depth is really good because of the concentric drivers. Soundstage is also wide. The potential drawback of this type of sound signature is you may find it boring because of its relative lack of coloration. It also requires a beefier amp to drive since it can dip below 4 ohms.

The BR02 is not as refined or neutral. Its sound is a little rougher around the edges/grainier than the UB5. But I find the tonality of this speaker to be very pleasant. It has more warmth in the midrange, which makes female vocals in particular sound really nice. The imaging is also good.

Neither speaker can do really deep bass since they have 5" drivers, but the UB5 bass is cleaner. The fit/finish of both speakers is nothing special, but I find the BR02 to be superior in that area because the vinyl finish on the ELAC tends to peel away around the edges after time. Neither speaker is super high resolution/detailed sounding like a KEF, Monitor Audio, or Focal. If that is your type of sound, you may find these to be "dark" sounding.

Personally, I think the UB5 is better when listening to classical/orchestral/jazz music and the BR02 for listening to vocal music like rock/pop/soul.

A whole $50 less from the last Front Page deal just 6 weeks ago. These were on the Front Page almost every time they have been posted on here over the past three years while they have come down from $329 in October 2020 to $199 recently. A lot of popular speakers have gone UP in price since the pandemic. If these are worth anything, they should be literally flying off the shelves now (no pun intended).

I kind of see about the colors. I do like the Driftwood and am not hating on the other ones either. But they aren't the kind of colors that would "go with everything".

Without being an audiophile could I tell these apart from my ~$150 edifier bookshelf speakers?

Any deals on an amp to drive these?

Picked these up with the 199 deal from a week or so ago. I have to say I'm really pleased. They're definitely super neutral and pleasant to hear . I'd say they're definitely a notch below my KEF LSX Wireless speakers but a great value for an entry point into good stereo sound.

Also as a side note- Driving them with the Martin Logan Forte Amp also from last week , and the Jamo sub from earlier this week. Nice little slickdeals hi-fi setup!

I don't know much about speakers. But would a headphone amp be able to power these speakers? I have a XDUOO TA-22 DAC&Tube Balance Headphone Amplifier

Looks like a great set of speakers, but I'm not ready to splurge ~$500 on an amps like Yamaha WXA-50. Wonder if it would do well with some cheaper alternatives like SMSL SA300 or Topping MX3.

My gut says this is a bad idea. While technically this speaker should generate 89dB at 1m off of a single watt that most headphone amps can do, the bookshelves probably have about 8 ohm impedance which would probably burn up most headphone amps that are used to seeing 32-250 ohms.

More common would be using the analog output off a headphone/DAC combo to run the DAC as a preamp to a power amp to the speakers.

If it's your first foray into bookshelves, I'd just buy the Edifier 1280DBs that are posted on sale on the front-page. They are powered and have great inputs and outputs for convenience. If you get into some better stuff later, they can be used for a TV or put in a garage.
