I have an Echelon spin bike from previous slick deal. A lot of complaints about the echelon app and cost to use it but the workaround is the buy the $5 (I believe) QZ fitness app and I was able to see the bikes cadence, resistance and use it alongside Apple fitness for great workouts.

If this rower can connect to the QZ app as well then I think it is a great deal. I am not sure about the lack of resistance, but I'm pretty sure it would be sufficient for someone with my physique.

If you get rid of incentivized reviews, it's 1.5 star.
While this may or may not be junk, some of the 1 star reviews are people complaining that you need to pay for a subscription to use it when this is not true. You can either use the Freestyle mode in the Echelon app or you can use a third party app QZ as others have already mentioned.

Just my 2 cents. This might be a decent deal for someone that already has an Echelon membership. I have a bike since June of 2022 and it came with an annual plan for $300. I really liked the bike and decided that membership fee is worth it for me. I started looking into their other machines to address other muscle groups and grabbed the rower with a screen on woot sale 6 months ago for $800. My situation is unique, my work has an annual subsidy for gym, sport equipment etc.
I like my rower, but less than my echelon bike. Many people complain about resistance - I think that with a correct body position it's just right, at least for me. Initially I cranked it up and immediately threw my back. Pulling is smother compared to other rowers I tried.
This rower does seem to have a strip down design, the single back leg looks less stable than mine and the $300 deal screen-less version mentioned earlier in the thread. The internals of the pulling mechanism are probably the same though.
One more thing about the membership - I am currently on 6 month 1/2 price promotion, $20 a month. They sent it to me because in their system my old membership tied to their bike looked lapsed. I plan to pause the membership in April since I do outdoor cycling a lot.

The app doesn't make resistance higher then what machine can do. Low resistance is mentioned in most of the reviews. Unless it's for kids or elderly it may be limited use. Putting this in box to return it would be more painful or almost impossible.

Anyway here is the review of freestyle app
" First you realize you cant use the app without making an account which you can't do from the app. Then you try to make an account but it prompts you to choose a membership. Stop there and just sign into the app. Dont be fooled into thinking you have to select the free membership to continue.
The app is pretty basic and useless without a membership.
You have to select the free workout from the extras menu to start. The bluetooth syncs up rather easily but the light flashes the brightest most obnoxious blue so I ended up putting tape over it.
Once connected it will show your stats, but they are super small and at the bottom of the screen. The majority of the screen is taken up by ads for the membership classes. It was too small for my phone so I had to grab an old iPad to really see the stats. Sometimes the stats dont work or dont display correctly. In that case you have to disconnect the bluetooth and try again. I have no idea how accurate the data is but I find it hard to believe it's correct with how buggy it is."

I'll just comment on the instructors as I have the Echelon bike and treadmill…

The instructors and classes offered are top notch. A bit pricey, but if you have multiple family members, they can use it as well under the monthly fee.

I have never used their rower.
I'll just comment that Chick Fil A is delicious after working out. It's a bit pricey but top notch.

I have never used this rower or an instructor.

Ordered one after going through all the reviews. Looking for a basic rower to start with. Seems like of reviews are tied to lack of resistance and inability to navigate around the app/tech without a subscription. I'm up for the challenge

Reading comments from previous slickdeal posted earlier this year ($297) and came upon this very informative post. Hope this helps. I did order one as I have been in the market for one.

I bought the rower. I confirmed the following:

1. The rower has no screen or readout. You can use the Rower without a screen as the resistance control and rowing action works (duh), but you have to connect the rower to a phone or tablet to see rowing stats which makes for a much more useful workout imo.
2. You can download the Echelon app to a device, however, you must have a free trial or a paid account to login. you can only start a free trial or a paid account on the website.
3. Since I did not want to pay for a subscription every month (and I do not pay for any other compatible subscriptions like Peleton, Apple Fit, etc), I looked into the QZ Fitness app. The Beta version of the QZ Fitness app IS compatible with this rower. The app is $5.99. You have to pay and install the app, then reach out to the developer directly via email to have him add you as a beta tester, after which the app will update to the beta version.

The rower seems well built but I cannot speak to long term reliability. Other posters likely have point about Concept 2 being a better long term invesetment as you can get replacement parts, but this is a starting point for my wife's rowing workouts.

I like that the rower is basically silent while in use. I use a Concept 2 at the gym which is loud by comparison. I would say that the resistance on the Concept 2 at #10 is comparable to the Echelon at level 32. At the end of the day, even if the resistance is too weak for you personally, just row faster to get a better cardio workout, and for additional resistance tranining mix in some push-ups, dips, weighted rows between 100m / 500m sprints.

just my two cents. hope this is helpful!
For what it is worth, if you are planning to pay for the Echelon app/subscription anyway, it might make sense to pay for 2 years of service for $799 and get the rower free:
https://echelonfit.com/pages/free-row

EDIT/UPDATE: I used a luggage scale to measure the weight of pulling force at a constant 18spm at a couple different resistance levels from the Echelon and the Concept 2 Model E at my work gym. Not scientific, but indicative of relative force from each machine:
Echelon row sport
Level 1: 16lb
16: 20lb
32: 30lb

Concept 2
Level 1: 18lb
5: 22lb
10: 28lb

So, if this thing is so bad, what is a good basic rower that doesn't cost a fortune?

was attempting to give it a try and worried those points.
key point after looking at the review: "resistance are too low even at max setting", "you CANNOT access your readout (RPMs, distance, intensity, etc.) without paying for a monthly subscription"

but at $150... you cannot ask more. just a rower without any app etc probably worth that price as a used.... changed my mind and ordered one.

I got this for $300 November 2022 and feel it was a good deal. I use QZ and watch YouTube or TV, no classes. Resistance feels very light, but you can get a good workout if you keep a fast pace. For $150, I'd recommend it.

Perfect for my wife. She wants more of a cardio workout so the low resistance is perfect. Will be a great Xmas gift as she has been asking for this for almost a year now.
