Wait for Blackwell (50-Series). Unless you jump to a 4090, it's not worth it performance wise from a 3080.

Pay the extra 100, get 7900 xtx with 24 gb of vram. No regrets. Card handles anything. Don't pay the nvidia tax. It's not worth it

Nevermind, I thought you you were saying $50 more than the 4070 ti. The link you sent is basically the retail price for a 7900 XTX, and definitely not a "slickdeal".

against my better judgment i'll probably hold out for a 4080 super so i can at least have AIB choice, and a more meaningful upgrade from a 3080 currently

Absolutely silly buying Nvidia now. Unless a true NEED, just wait another month for super. Guaranteed either those will be equal price and superior or these will have much better sales.

Except for 4090, there's little demand for them.

7900xtx is $50 more, 24% faster, 50% more vram.

Even at this price the 4080 is a silly choice.

I've owned ~40 different gpus in the past decade. I've never noticed a difference in drivers between AMD and Nvidia. COD and Halo Infinite were glitched on Nvidia for months. Switched to AMD and it was fixed. Then there were glitches on AMD with something I was doing, switched back to Nvidia and it was fixed. I'm currently back on AMD.

TLDR, both manufacturers have issues with drivers at any given time. I have 18 years of experience and have owned more cards than most people will own in a lifetime and I don't notice a difference. Buy the most FPS per dollar and disregard brand loyalty.

I was curious about 7900 XTX vs 4080 performance and I think the consensus is that 4080 is quite a bit better if one uses ray tracing, but for all other use cases the 7900 XTX outperforms it.
I don't like spending this kind of money to not be able to get good performance on everything therefore I would go with the 4080 for ray tracing because that is likely the future, is it not?

I am speaking about 4k performance btw.

The 4080 is out of stock. And cannot get myself to buy the 4070 Ti due to the 12GB VRAM. If I build a new system, it'll be set for the next 7+yrs or something. And the way newer games want more VRAM, I'm sure 12GB will show its age after even 3-4 yrs. At these prices I might as well spend $750 on a 7900 XT than $670 on a 4070Ti. Yes, the performance is mostly similar and 4070 Ti has better RT and upscaling, but considering the length of time I'll use this system, I need to heavily consider what the potential performance gap will be after 4-5 yrs or so.

Games with Unreal 5 have just started coming out, and it generally has heavier requirements than Unreal 4. I'm sure developers will push limits on VRAM requirement as years go by. My guess is that the 20GB VRAM on 7900XT will age much better than the 12GB on 4070Ti. At least for me, no point getting the 4070Ti even though it's cheaper than 7900XT with this sale.
If anyone is planning on getting a 4070 Ti, wait one month for the 4070 Ti Super card.

It will have 16GB VRAM.

I've had 5 nvidia cards since 2014- 970, 2070, 3060 Ti, 2 x 3080- and AMD's software package, Adrenaline, is superior. It's not even close. VAC bans from anti lag+ was a joke though.
