If you're not part of the expired D15 thread, some of us have internal crossover damage. You might wanna pull off the binding post cover (4 Allen screws) and see if anything was broken loose in shipping. Something about Def Tech's packaging and UPS gorillas results in damaged crossovers. I ordered several of the older BP series Def tech speakers years ago and several had damaged crossovers from being dropped.
It looks like an inductor near the back is subject to snapping loose.

Okay, I couldn't pass this up. Finally going to replace my 13 plus year old BP7004's before another amp goes out. $799 for speakers that originally retailed for $4598. Ive' been totally happy with the Def tech bipolars and I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed in these. Also got the mismatched white center for $299 because it's hidden in a cabinet. Thanks for the post.

I picked these up when the were $1200 for the three to replace my BP8060s for the same concern, and while the BPs had great bass with the powered woofers I also found them more difficult to integrate with a sub effectively. The D17s have been great so far, they don't sound as large as a bipolar speaker, but they broke in well after a week or so of use.and I adjusted to their sound quite well. And they are absolutely beautiful in person (I bought the white set) with exceptional build quality and presentation.
Sending back my D15s and grabbed these. For $150 per speaker difference, from the previous D15 deal, seems worth it to me for the bigger speaker size. Plus move from the 5.5 to 6.5 midrange drivers. Or maybe I'm just over compensating. 🤣🤣

I'm considering the same. How much was return shipping for the pair?

Definitive rates the D15 and D17 sensitivity at 85.5 dB and 87 dB respectively. Assuming that's exactly correct, my guesstimate is that you would need a 50% more powerful amplifier for the D15. So going to the D17 effectively "buys you" 50% more watts on your amp even setting aside the low-end extension

I try to learn what I can, perhaps some of the sources I used are flawed or perhaps my understanding is flawed. Make your own conclusions, for sure. Perhaps the right number ought to be 33%-50%. Perhaps a more reasonable way to say it is that the higher sensitivity "buys you" 1.5 dB more amp headroom

Are these good with Base ? Sorry for dumb question… do they feel like base tubes?
These are sealed with bass radiators spec'd down to 38 Hz, which should mean they have good, tight bass. They should be great for most music except possibly EDM and hip hop for bass heads. For home theater you'll probably want a subwoofer to go with them.
