Almost all of these are standalone. Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Court of Owls (it was the start of a "reboot" of the series), The Long Halloween. As long as you know the basics, you're fine. Hush is a bit more set in regular continuity (Catwoman is an ally, not a villain) but nothing too intense. The Three Jokers may be a bit continuity-heavy; I had stopped reading by that point. I would put Year One, The Long Halloween (sort of a sequel),and The Dark Knight Returns (almost a epilogue at the top of the list). You could map Nolan's trilogy onto those books pretty easily.

How does it work to read these on a Kindle?
You don't have to read on kindle. If it says add to comixology library, you get to read it on anything with a comixology app. Or kindle app, you choose. Kindle, iPad, phone, pc…your choiceSmilie

I've never read any of the Batman comics. Are these part of a series, or are they all standalone? Which one should I start with?

I have them as first prints of individual issues and another hardback for reading. Frank Miller's Batman story is great and I recommend reading if you aren't familiar.
I have the Dark Knight foil cover signed by Miller and Jansen. That and the Clayton Crain infinity Wolverine #1 where Crain asked me if he could add blood to the claws when he signed it are the jewels of my collection.

Awesome. I havn't read Dark Knight Returns since comics came out in the 80s. Probably own the first printing and stored somewhere in the garage.
Yeah, same here. I have the original on my bookshelf next to the Batman Spawn crossover, Spawn 1-20, etc.

Comixology is going away (except as a storefront).

The description on this post really doesn't do this justice. There are thousands of books on sale here. Does this sale include every graphic novel DC has published? it sure felt like it, scrolling through. Every title I could think of, I looked for and saw it scrolling through the giant sale list.

In addition to the Batman classics cited, it includes over a hundred more Batman books. The sale includes dozens of Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman etc. It includes TV tie-ins for Arrow, Teen Titans etc. DC classics like Crisis on Infinite Earths. Every Vertigo title I could think of, like Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Death, Doom Patrol, Preacher, The Invisibles. There's obscure one off stuff by Gaiman (Stardust, Neverwhere etc) and Grant Morrison (Sebastian O). Tons of Alan Moore, his whole Swamp Thing run and then books that were originally not published by DC like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Promethea.

I was a Marvel kid and I still managed to jump in on 35 titles, all 0.99-2.99, with a ton more I'm considering.

After reading that article you can no longer purchase issues individually that is absolute nonsense.
