The screen is the same one they put on $500-$600 gaming laptops, it's terrible.

While this is a great price for the other hardware (no other 4080 laptop is close to $1.5k), I would only consider it if I'm gaming the majority of the time on an external monitor and just use the screen when traveling or whatnot....it really is a terrible display with very poor color.

Also a 144hz 1080p (or 1920x1200 screen in this case) paired with a 4080 is just a really weird pairing. You would expect either a super high refresh rate 1080p screen or 1440p considering the FPS a 4080 can push.

Full powered 4080 with i9 for $1500?? Even factoring in its a last gen i9, this seems like a crazy good deal. What am I missing?

You are not taking much of a gamble. You get a free return if needed and MSI will still give you the warranty based on your invoice date. I suspect a number of these are being returned due to the price drop and screen. If you can deal with the screen, that open box is a great deal.

So both the stock screen and the upgraded 240 hz WQXGA use the same 40 pin EDP connector. You can get that screen for around $130. I will order one once my open box laptop arrives and let everyone know how it works.

Usually fairly easy to do. Just remove the front bezel, remove 4 screws, remove the cable and install the new panel. Sometimes the bezels can be a pain.

I received my open box today and was able to register it for the 24 month MSI warranty without issue. I have my new screen on the way to replace that too. This is a really nice laptop for the price. Build quality is in between the Lenovo and HP - being better than the Omen but not as good at the legion 7 series. Hinges are rock solid for the design.

not worth, only uprgade is the CPU from i9 12900HX to i9-13950HX.
If screen is also upgraded it might be a goof buy.
