Build quality, higher end capacitors, better warranty, higher power, more inputs/outputs, more speakers, better room correction, better processing, and things like "Imax Enhanced", etc. Room correction seems to be a big thing on the forums these days and the best room correction is saved for the high end models.

Like a lot of things it's a quick improvement from super cheap to reasonable. After that you are paying for smaller and smaller improvements for a lot more money. As an engineer (not sound engineer mind you) I have always said the first 95% of perfection comes relatively cheap. That last 5% is really expensive. Yet some people are willing to pay a lot for that last 5%.

I own one as well... certainly an SDer would know to wait for the inevitable sales to come around. I think this is the lowest it's been. (I bought at $399).
Right when COVID hit, the AVRs were a great price but I was apprehensive spending money at that time đŸ¤”

Does this make sense if I still have a 1080p TV in the living room where my current receiver is? I have my ps5 connected to a LG C2 in our "den" so I'm thinking I should wait until I upgrade the living room tv to 4k and also get a 4k blu ray player. Still using a oppo DVD audio/sacd player and a standard Blu-ray player so my current living room receiver has that handled (onkyo sr-606)

I only need 5.1/5.2 but for this price, seems like its a better option than other models and leaves room for possible future upgrades.

Yeah same Q. Wondering if I return the Costco s760H to save $34 and get this instead…
Main differences is the S970H has 90W/channel RMS and a 460W power supply (vs 75 and 400), 2 HDMI outputs, and a 2 year warranty. Personally I returned the S760H and got this last time it was on sale.

I got the onkyo 6050 (still in the box) for $100 less. Is this worth $100 more?
How did you get it for $100 less? Best price I am seeing is $299

In for one! Hovered over this 970 the last two times here on SD and finally pulled the trigger.
Saved a few bucks with my procrastinating, so all good. Was almost ready to buy Onkyo 6050, but my preference is Denon.
Only piece of electronics that has died on me over the years was an Onkyo Stereo Receiver. Had that in the back of my mind
Some of us still remember the Onkyo hdmi failures fiasco

Costco has s760 for the same price. Costco has a better return policy if something goes wrong. Is 970 significantly better?

Couldn't resist. Upgrading from a 10-year-old Yamaha RX-V375 ($180 at Newegg, ha), before the time of UHD, HDR, eARC, Dolby Vision & Atmos, DTS-X, etc. Hope Denon can deliver an equally awesome product that will keep eyes and ears happy for another decade. Reviews are fantastic. Thanks all.
I think denon delivers much warmer sound. I think you'll be super happy with it. I am comparing to entry level Yamaha and Onkyo like your old one...

And now thinking back I also had an Onkyo 6 CD player that lost it's mind. Hated those things anyway, but replaced it with a Sony that functioned perfectly right up to when it in the yard sale

The 970 is a newer model (late 2022) so better tech with more features. More power as well with 90 wpc

Wish adorama would combine this s970h with the jamo speakers and give a combo deal like how they did with onkyo

If you don't already have a 5.1 AVR or your existing 5.1 receiver is so old that it's not serving your needs, then yeah, you should definitely buy a 5.1.2 instead of another 5.1 AVR for the possible future upgrades you mention.

But if you've already got a 5.1 AVR that's working great, and you have no plans to add speakers immediately, why bother - unless you just want to treat yourself? Smilie I just went from a 5.1 Yamaha to a 5.1.2 Denon in my small living room and found the benefits to be noticeable but marginal.

Anyone have any insight into how this would perform compared to a Denon S540BT?

I see this has "only" MultiEQ vs MultiEQ XT but I'm not clear what that means. One of my complaints about the 540BT is the lack of real calibration. I run a 3.1 setup.
