The $2100 M1 Max seems like a better deal from a longevity perspective since it's roughly equivalent to a M3 Pro plus plenty of RAM and storage. It's just more "future proof" than the M1 Pro model.

A funny example … at my company we had a bunch of 2019 iMacs, Core i9 CPUs, 64GB RAM, 1TB SDD. The trade in company told us they couldn't offer us a dime for them because they were too old but that they'd recycle them for free. Long story short I sold them on eBay for close to $1000 a piece.
My point is that if you pay $1600 for the MBP it's instantly depreciated to $700-1000 because that is the going trade-in value. That's a 50% hit. immediately. Normally MBPs take a couple years to depreciate that much. Of course depreciation means nothing if you keep a computer until it's done, but if you trade up every couple of years then it is a factor in "cost of ownership." The $ one pays for a computer is not as important as actual "cost of ownership." So for example, I paid $2200 for my MBP in 2021. Got $1005 back in trade. So my cost of ownership was $1195 or $597 per year.
