It's two different deals with two different links. The 32GB model is a M1 Max chip for $2099 whereas the $1600 is 1TB and 16GB. The deal on the 16GB is marginal in my opinion and only because it's NEW (if that really matters to you). This has been less for certified refurb.

The M1 Max with 32GB and 1TB seems like the better deal if your budget allows.

You miss my point. The trade in value IS what an item is worth because that is what someone is willing to pay you for it. Of course, if they are a reseller they are going to mark it up otherwise there is no reason for them to buy it in the first place.

My point is that if you pay $1600 for the MBP it's instantly depreciated to $700-1000 because that is the going trade-in value. That's a 50% hit. immediately. Normally MBPs take a couple years to depreciate that much. Of course depreciation means nothing if you keep a computer until it's done, but if you trade up every couple of years then it is a factor in "cost of ownership." The $ one pays for a computer is not as important as actual "cost of ownership." So for example, I paid $2200 for my MBP in 2021. Got $1005 back in trade. So my cost of ownership was $1195 or $597 per year.
No, your logic is flawed because the M1 Max model sees the same level of depreciation. Looking at Apple's site my M1 Max with 64GB RAM is worth a $1430 trade in. Suppose they offer $100 less for the 32GB model that's a 37% depreciation, the same depreciation from the deal price posted here as with the M1 Pro model.

So even by your own metric you are not making a valid case.

Moreover your metric is wrong. There is no computer you could buy with the hope to retain a greater percent of its value on trade in. This is just how the trade in business operates.

If the reseller is up charging the item to make a sale, then that is the depreciated value, not what the reseller paid for it. What the reseller is willing to pay versus what a buyer is willing to pay for used is vastly different at times.
I think I disagree with the semantics here. The depreciated value should be what you are able to get rid of it for whether to a resellers or a "buyer" whether that be goodwill eBay or Craigslist. The value is set when the owner and the buyer actually agree on the price. We can talk numbers on website all day buy if a seller can't move the item for x dollars is that really the "value?" So I think it is just a technicality. The value gets set when it actually gets sold by a willing seller. Unrealized gains are not gains. But so are unrealized losses.

FYI I just traded in my mint condition M1 Pro 16.2" (16GB RAM/512GB Storage) and got $1005 from Apple. I looked around at other sites that buy used Macs and the going price was $725-800. So I don't think $1600 is a great price for this model. Fair, but not outstanding. Essentially if you buy for $1600 you are instantly depreciated 40-50%.

The $2100 M1 Max seems like a better deal from a longevity perspective since it's roughly equivalent to a M3 Pro plus plenty of RAM and storage. It's just more "future proof" than the M1 Pro model.
Damn I got a good deal. 1100 before tax for that unit you traded in but silver refurb from Microcenter, and double warranty due to cc.

Imo. Win all around. Some people got m2 model for 1100 as well.

I bought a 75% off Walmart Lenovo legion laptop for 400 after tax used for a year and sold for 600 last month.

Man, I'm slightly disappointed the 32gb version isn't $1600 because that'd be super slick. I was ready to pull the trigger despite really looking for 64gb-96gb. Good deal still nevertheless.

I'm a first time Mac buyer. Is this a trusted retailer? What is the return policy? Is this a good price?

This is the way. No need to pay $250 more for $1,600 brand new. Just isn't if people only knew how good these "refurbs" are with just single digit hours of powered on time.

There's zero guarantee you're going to get that. For all we know the refurb could literally be an Apple Store display model which was tortured instead of a barely used store return.
