Take note that the 1700DBs does not have the optical input, so the 1280DBs is the easier option for TV.

Both the R1280 and R1700 have a Sub Out port
It's R1280DBs specifically (as well as R1700BTs) which has Sub Out to be exact. Notice the s at the end of the model name. While only a single R1700 model exists (so no confusion there), there are multiple versions of R1280, so it is important to not overlook the differences in features.

This is also why the black R1280DBs here is such a great value: While R1280T (the cheapest version of these speakers) gets discounted to $84 a few times a year, it has RCA analog inputs only. For mere $23 you are adding 1) Optical AND Coaxial In + 2) Bluetooth + 3) Sub Out with this model. Even if you don't have an immediate need for those features, I'd rather have them than not for $23. The Bluetooth alone is already worth it if you or a visiting friend ever want to stream something from your phone hassle-free.

Note that these only have a half inch tweeter, and the 1700s have a 3/4 inch tweeter. They put a nice size 4" woofer in the cabinet and skip putting a 1" soft dome tweeter in. That would make a world of difference for nearfield as well as sitting at a distance. Yes, they beat cheap PC speakers, but they're basically powered monitors like you would buy at Sam Ash. The best nearfields always use a full 1" tweeter. Edifier sells an MR4 model with a 4" woofer and 1" tweeter that's $129 right now on Amazon.

Also, the R1280DB (without the "s") has an old, crummy-looking remote. The DBs (with the "s") has an updated and nice-looking remote.

I have these and love them for my small turntable setup. The BT is solid, so I have Alexa playing through them too.

I love my Edifier speakers, though to be fair these ones are much cheaper than mine (I got the S1000DB for about $300). I bought this model for a friend's birthday and likes them so much I splurged and bought myself the more expensive model.

Great speakers. I got these and was very happy with the standalone sound. The option to get a subwoofer out is a no brainer imo. I've recently added a Cambridge audio minx x201 sub to my whole setup and while I was happy with just the R1280DBS, having the separate subwoofer now takes the listening experience up a few notches.

Took too long to decide, looks like the deal is dead now for the 1280s

Got a pair of these for Xmas. I like how they can easily connect to a sub, but found them lacking mids. Something just seems off / empty when listening using these speakers as compared to a cheaper pair I was using before. I probably would not rebuy Edifier speakers in the future, but won't be returning them either. Overall they are large and in my own opinion should sound fuller than they do.

sound quality wise how do these compare to Klipsch Pro Media 2.1?
obviously these don't come with sub but assuming an equivalent sub how do they compare

I am using the Pro Media set hooked up to a Fluance RT81 turntable. They were my pc speakers but I repurposed them for playing records. I'd like to get a second set of speakers to use for playing on the turntable and put the Pro Media back connect to computer for occasional use. WOuld the Edifier's need an emp from the Fluance? I don't need that with the Pro Media would prefer not to have to buy an amp.
I just got the RT1700. Generally, the low end for RT1700 is not as strong as Pro Media 2.1. You can pick up T5 subwoofer to compensate. T5 is going for 119 on AMZ right now.

Did you get the 1700 or 1280?

I picked up the T5 woofer for 119.
