I used TurboTax for a few years before I switched.. the price difference was a huge reason.. I've now used HR block for the past 2-3 years. I'm good with the experience and will continue to use them. Turbotax software UI/experience is probably slightly better but not enough to charge that much more

Back in early 2000s, I used to get BOTH for FAR. I compared them both for years. Several years later, once we needed to pay for them (no longer FAR), I still shared with family where one person would buy Turbotax and the other H&R. Still kept on comparing. Always identical results.

When TurboTax added Spyware to their s/w, we stopped buying and have never looked back. We all now exclusively use H&R Block. It was just TaxCut before and then H&R bought them out.

The state eFile fee till last year was $19.99. Not sure what it is this year though.

I've always used TurboTax, but at a little more than half the price, I'm considering trying out H&R Block. Any input from those who have used both? Also, what is the State e-file fee from H&R Block?

Can someone explain what is the benefit if any of buying the software versus using the online version?

Will this software be able to handle the new Inflation Reduction Act Tax Credits? That was one of the only reasons I was thinking about paying someone to do my taxes this year. I should qualify for all 2600 in credits.

Yes it will. All software providers update their software annually, as well as periodically during tax season, to account for changes in the tax code.

A downloaded version allows you to run different scenarios. For example, one joint return and two separate returns, each for every spouse, to compare MFJ vs MFS returns. Running the actual returns is the only way to figure it out. Online version makes it very difficult to do.

Then there is the issue with privacy for online version. With desktop version you have more control.

How is the physical code work? Do I just get the license key in the mail and still need to download? What I found out is that H&R Block will not let me re-download after certain time with the digital download version, say I changed computer and need to file an 1040-X. I had to pay for the 2021 software again in order to file an amendment even though I had bought a copy to file the original return.

Yes does rental and any self-employment income and just about everything else imaginable. Only difference between Basic, Deluxe and Premium is the amount of guidance, extra prompts and dialogs.

First off the online versions cost more. Worse the online versions of the same name do less and will force an upgrade and more money spent Online Deluxe will not do rental or self-employment income, yet the installed version will.

Installed versions give the benefit of being able to do multiple returns or play with tax scenarios. You can learn much about your tax picture just playing around and reading the help in the software. Installed also keeps your data local and readily accessible. as a bonus if you do find you made a mistake you can print and file an amended return. You would need to pay again with the online versions.

See no reasons at all for the online versions.

Are you sure it will not count? I could not find that on the H and R block website. One person on reddit said an intuit (turbo tax) CS person said it would not count.
