if you are in spain or france and want to see more of europe.....
Spain's national railway company Renfe International have discounted rail fares, up to 70% off for the new year, whether you're headed North or South. Also, you may upgrade from a Básico Ticket to an Elige Ticket for just €1 more.
It is possible you'll find a better price flying (depends on lots of factors), but you'll have a better experience with the train. Most likely you will depart and arrive from the city center (rather than an airport in the suburbs), not have to worry about getting through security or getting there 2 hours ahead of time, have a more comfortable ride in a much bigger seat where you can get up and walk around and go to the bar car, etc etc.
Traveling by train in Europe is completely different than in the US. It is a much better experience than flying and probably quicker door to door.
Is it cheaper to travel from Spain into Paris than flying directly into Paris?
Good luck using the Renfe website, it's pretty frustrating to use.

Domestic flights can indeed be an expedient and incredibly cheap option in Europe. I've grabbed low-cost carrier flights for literal city bus fare: round trip Lisbon to Portugal for a few dollars(!). Of course, said carrier allowed zero baggage and operated in a set of gates on the edge of the airport that ran like a cattle stampede (opening their security what I can only describe as precariously close to the schedule of the associated flights). This was fun for a day trip between two cities, but is more the exception than the rule for most travelers looking to connect between nearby cities.
One other feature of domestic Europe flights I haven't seen mentioned in the thread is that many operators of nice international flights convert to a competitive low-cost mode for domestic legs. These accomodations can make Southwest seem extravagant. Lufthansa is one whose international connections are my favorite... but whose domestic flights (with cardboard thin seats and other minimal/non-existent amenities) I tolerate but otherwise avoid when possible.
High speed train routes have been so succesful they've been an increasingly competitive travel option vs. air even in an era of convenience (just try getting a flight on Alitalia[cnn.com]).
I wish the US had high speed trains. We have a pseudo high speed train in palm beach and it costs $27 to go down the road. It's no fun when the cars on I95 are passing you.
I think this is where America differs from countries like Japan and England. It's affordable for us to drive and much more convenient, so there's a lot less public support for public transportation. Combine that with the fact that government is perceived to be just plain bad at managing these types of things, and people just don't want it.

Here here. the cost of traveling privately is very high in Europe. . The majority of the cars are small for efficiency and the price of fuel is very high.
Waste of time if flights are about the same price.
It often is a wash, when you consider the time it takes to get to the airport, get through check-in and walk through security, then sit at the gate waiting to board before the plane even takes off.
Do most of it again in reverse after the plane lands.
That's a bad way to spend your valuable vacation time and funds, Bud.

All European websites and software are odd and weird. I remember last year I spent days and couldn't get to understand Eurorail or something similar. They had multi day passes but after spending hours on the site I didn't even know if it's the real official website, 3rd party website adding markup or completely fake scam site.
I think their logic when comes to software in general is awkward. And having multiple languages in Europe that are similar but different, impacts their programming process.
It's not just European websites, its their software and crypto as well. I trade a lot of crypto and I make sure I avoid any crypto that comes out of Europe. Remember Gavin who fkd up the ETH code and caused the split with ETC? One of the biggest idiots in crypto, yet a celebrity even with all his massive failures in crypto workd . Then he went on to make the most useless chain Dot.
Software too, they make some of the best software , like Dassault, but no one can use except a few who dedicate their lives to it and never use any other cad software.
Or Ubuntu for instance. I bet you if Ubuntu was headquartered in the US, it would dominate the market with higher market share than windows.
They are great with building beautiful cities, city planning and incredible architecture. They make the most thoughtful spaces because they work together well and consider their surroundings when they design. Paris is my favorite city and i truly hope I get to live there for a month at least at some point in my lifetime. And of course they are great at the rule of law and creating the best democracies with the exception of allowing the right wing and neo Nazis to do whatever they want.
