It's kind of like dark souls movement/attacks but it's more forgiving (at least until you beat it).
Overall great game.

It's a grind number go up type game
You can rerun missions, so ultimately, the cheater would only ruin that one quest run for you if they happen to appear in your team randomly.
Compare this to the newer MH Rise with a peak of 27.5k and current player count of 16.8k.
If you remove the Free 2 Play games on the steam charts it would be rank 6.
If you remove the newest top selling and played games it would be top 3.
#1 game over 5 years old has been GTA5, #2 is Wallpaper Engine, and #3 is Monster Hunter. (if you exclude F2P and new games)
We might see a player count drop and the gradual decrease over time by the next expansion, but that would be in 2025 with Monster Hunter Wilds. I personally like Monster Hunter World and it has been my #1 game for a while. I also have MH Rise, but I feel like that game babies players too much by making a lot of stuff easier with the wire bug and other changes.

Do I really want to try and jump into monster hunter again? They are difficult games with lots of grinding and time commitment.
And I never enjoyed the "go try and find the enemy on the giant map" gameplay, especially when the enemy would run away once you've weakened it to 50% or so, then you have to spend 10 minute trying to find it. Unless I missed something in the older MH games, there were no map indicators.

Or just marketed hype between capcom and influencers to bring the game back?
