We've had 20 years of SSDs being available, and 15 years of SSDs being available to techies, and 10 years of SSDs being common. Do you see mass failures of SSDs presently?

I don't.

This entire TBW business is fearmongering. Just buy what you need, as minimal/inexpensive as possible that meets your needs, and sell it in a few years when something better is introduced.

2 fans. Only the base MBP with the regular m3 chip has 1.

Yea, it's a Mac thing. A new Mac thing to be more specific. They come in 8GB(criminal), 16GB, 18GB, 24GB, 36GB, 48GB, 64GB, 96GB and 128GB depending on which M3 chip you get.

With the pace of CPU improvements slowing down, this will last you 10 years

Yes, but not the hard drive. 18GB ram is more than enough for a lot of people but, 512gb isn't enough. My wife's 2018 MacBook Pro 15.6" is still running fine until Apple stop OS support for Intel. Her MacBook 15.6" is an Intel i7, 16GB Ram, and 1 TB SSD.
The worst part of all these new MacBook is the SSD is soldered onto the motherboard along with RAM.

iOS 17 (2023) dropped support for iPhone X (2017).

iPadOS 17 (2023) dropped support for iPad 2017 and iPad Pro 2016.

macOS Sonoma (2023) dropped support for almost all Macs released in 2017. (Except the 2017 iMac Pro).

Apple will probably discontinue major OS updates for this 2023 MacBook around 2029. Some hope that Apple will support Macs longer now that they are all Apple Silicon, but that has not been true for iOS.

Phones don't have quite the performance headroom these MBPs do. Apple's gradually phasing out their Intel stuff because it's costly to maintain, and they've moved on. The same is unlikely to be true for Apple Silicon with how well they executed from the start with M1 devices.

Hopefully. Since 1998, the longest Apple has given a Mac a major OS update is 8.13 years from introduction. The fewest is 4.13 years: https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-co...upport.png

Right now it's 6 years. One would expect more years after the m1 transition, but 10 might be wishful thinking.

I would argue the RAM will hold you back long-term more than the disk space. You can always get an external drive or use an SD card. RAM is forever. 16/18GB is the BARE MINIMUM i would even consider for 2024.
