They can use generic cartridges no problem. I own the ADF version of this and have no problem throwing any cheap cartridge in and it never complains.

It all comes down to whether you think you'll need to scan or photocopy anything. If you can't recall needing that in the last 5 years or can't imagine needing it in the future, then you're good with the Brother.

FWIW, Brother makes good Multi Function Printers too.

Generic toner cartridges are about $15-20 on Amazon and work perfectly fine. Search for "d570 toner cartridge". Replace the model number if that isn't what you have.
