The 2690DW goes into Deep Sleep mode after 1 minute of idle time, which is the factory default setting. Wi-Fi Brother printers for some reason have trouble being re-reccognized by devices, over a Wi-Fi connection, when the printer has been in Deep Sleep mode. For the 2690DW, this issue can be managed by turning off Deep Sleep under 1. General Set Up > 5. Ecology > 3. Sleep Time. But Brother doesn't recommend the off setting because keeping it on apparently burns out some fuse faster. The easier way to avoid the Deep Sleep issue is turning the printer on right before using, then turning it off after use.

My recommendation to most people is to get a good mono laser printer for 95%+ of what you will print. Then also get a good reliable and cheap inkjet for printing color that also has a document feeder on the scanner. I have an Epson for my inkjet with a feeder which takes generic ink tanks that are $11 for all 5 colors with 2 standard black tanks.
Nice trick is the Epson will save scans to my pc as PDF's, then I can just turn around and reprint with the laser so I don't waste ink. Plus you have a backup, so if you're suddenly out of ink/toner you can still print with the other.
