"One state program download included-A $39.95 value (does not include e-file fee)"

*thanks to Frommy's post #11 for finding this out
________________________________________________________________

One state program download included. State e-file is sold separately (You pay e-File fee when you file with state inside software).

This is how they always sell the bundle.

Five free federal e-files are always included, but they never include free State e-file as it changes from one state to another in terms of cost.

(Not everyone needs state for example people living in FL and TX. Also some may need multiple states eFile.)

Free online state e-file for many (but not all) states: https://thefinancebuff.com/free-e...irect.html

Look, I agree with you that $20 to e-file a state return is an obnoxious fee, but I haven't found a way to e-file my state returns for less than that. So it's not just H&R Block, it's all the tax prep companies. Sure, I could print out my returns and mail them, but I'm willing to pay the $20 for the convenience of not having to do that.
Use CashApp taxes (formerly Credit Karma). Free to create your return and FREE TO E-FILE you Federal and State!

Support companies like this... Not scammy H&R Block.

Seems like $15 for deluxe ($35 - $20 gift card) is still a good deal, no? Assuming the gift card is something you would need/use. Does Deluxe ever get much lower than $15?

The main deal page [newegg.com] now shows $34.99 for all.

I did get them to do a price adjustment for me. I just mentioned that the price showed one thing, I added it to my cart, got payment information entered, and then the price adjusted. I also pointed out that the adjusted price still didn't match what my cart showed (at the time the product showed $34.99, but my cart showed $39.99). Not sure if that will work for everyone, but worth a shot.

It is. The best other deal was $20 straight up. So same deal but you pay $15 for a $20 gift card.

The rule of the thumb is that if you get a product for free, you are the product.
A lot of people are using free (or very cheap) services, but I, personally, would not trust CreditKarma with extremely sensitive information.
IRS is lousy, I know, but at least they are not selling your information left and right. CreditKarma (and similar online services): not so sure.
But it's your name, address and SSN.... Your call, your judgement.

Cash app makes money by advertising financial services to its users but they're not handing out yours SSN of course. FreeTaxUSA makes money from state e-file, deluxe upgrades, etc. Intuit/H&R Block do both of these things if you use the online versions. The desktop download/CD versions should be safer.

28 is better than 35 but 35 is still a deal if you can get a gift card that is basically cash to you. Not sure why SD doesn't just change the price to 35 and keep it FP

There are LAWS around this. A company's propensity to break the law does not have any correlation to how much they're selling their product for.
