Next year, the IRS will launch free software for everyone. Hopefully, it will be way simpler since they already got our info.

Deluxe Desktop should support all the same tax forms as Premium Desktop, though potentially with less guidance.

However, the online versions are different and have significant differences between Premium and Deluxe.

I was originally going to write that Deluxe Desktop supports everything that Premium Desktop does, but I see someone posted elsewhere that 2022 Deluxe Desktop doesn't support the (probably rare) situation of having all three of: (a) a loss on Schedule E, (b) income on Schedule C, and (c) ACA subsidies, while Premium does support it.

I had to stop using the software a couple years ago since they discontinued support for a form I needed in the Desktop edition, so I switched to something else.

https://www.hrblock.com/tax-softw...available/ lists all the forms supported in the Desktop software.

I think the CD is pretty useless by itself, since you need to download the form updates anyways. I generally just save a copy of the installer in online storage if needed.
Do you have a link for that "rare situation"?. That is me and prob most self-employed individuals. As a Premium user for years I just purchased Deluxe based on some posts indicating the only difference is in the amount of guidance provided.

I am seeing on the list of supported forms that many features, including SE Health Insurance/ACA Subsidy iterative, will be available on 01/19/24. But I believe was supported for many years now (at least it was on Premium)

A word of caution, anyone expecting to file form 8911 (credit for installing an EV charger at home for personal use), H&R Block doesn't support this. I have been filing with H&R Block for quite some time and am disappointed that it's not supported. I already got the program from the Newegg deal, now looking at alternate options. I have to either file with HRB and amend separately or file with TurboTax and get refund for HRB software
Download a hard copy of form 8911 from the IRS web site. Determine your 30% credit. In the H&R Block software open form No. 3800. Enter your 30% credit on line 1s. of part III. I found it necessary to also enter the value in line 1. of Part I. Your credit should now show up under "Other Business Credits".

Is there anyone else who ordered this and is still waiting on the e-delivery? I made the order 26 hours ago, and it's showing in my "Open Orders" list and I haven't received anything. I would think digital products would come almost immediately.

You should probably check with them. I ordered 30 min ago and received both downloads within 5 minutes. Or maybe they're in your spam folder?

FreeTaxUSA and Cash App both say they support form 8911:
https://www.freetaxusa.com/forms-federal
https://taxeshelp.cash.app/s/arti...es-support

Weird that the paid H&R Block doesn't support it when the free ones do...

Yea thats one of the reasons I switched to the free ones, Free tax USA for the last several years.

No having to worry about getting the right one or paying more after the fact.

Thank you for the info!

I just chatted with them and it was because my first payment attempt didn't go through (I think I typed in the wrong CCV number) -- I was prompted to try again and it went through the second time, but this apparently causes their ordering system some problems. They said I should have it by end of day tomorrow/Monday, once the system "re-validates" the payment.

If you have two computers, you may not have to purchase a second state.
It's a pain to pull taxes over to another computer and then pull other state's taxes and not do all at once. It's doable though.

Ummm I guess you didn't click the link. It's a blog post with a list of states that offer direct e-file on the states own department of revenue website for free. There are links to the state websites, but the blog doesn't get anything there. Like most other blogs (and this site), they probably make money off advertising and referral links, but you don't need to provide any personal information.

Lots of free options support investments and dividends. Just not the ones from TurboTax and H&R Block who want to upsell you. FreeTaxUSA and Cash App both support this with the free tier.

You can PREPARE an unlimited number of tax returns, both federal and state. For example, if you prepared a return for fifty friends, each one would be saved under a different file name on your computer. The federal and state data all reside in the same file. So fifty files, not one hundred. You begin with the federal. When finished, you can download one state for free, then begin completing the state return but the appropriate information is already automatically transferred into it (names, SSN, address, amounts, and so on).

You can electronically FILE up to five federal returns for free. Extras cost more.

To electronically FILE a state tax return, you have to pay about $19 for each one. Unless your return is many, many pages long it's simply much cheaper to buy a stamp or two and send via USPS. If you indeed have a boatload of pages, the cost to mail might be more since it's determined by weight. It would take a huge number of pages to cost $18 in postage.

The tax companies are betting that lazy filers will just spend the extra money to e-file state returns also. It seems logical to assume that most people who do that don't visit this site much.
