Moving games from the external Western Digital or any other drive is much faster than downloading the game again over the internet. I have 500/500 fiber service and I usually see between 35MB/s and 55MB/s downloads on the Xbox Series X. I'm seeing a consistent 85MB/s transfer on a WD_BLACK P10 5GB external drive.
You can play Xbox One and 360 downloadable games directly from these external drives.

Depends on the game.
Xbox did it exactly like PlayStation but less clear. PS4 hard drive, PS5 NVME.
When it comes to XBOX, if the game has Series X support then it needs to be on a NVME. Internal storage or the NVME add on.
But games that are still classified as last gen will run from an external hard drive.
I have a 6tb hd on my Series X and last gen games from it.

A few will run from an external. Google xbox gen 9 aware.

You only see 35mbps to 55mbps on your series x? I get 300 mbps wired and a little over 100 mbps wireless on my series x, and know my friends who pay for faster Internet get more than that too.
You can but Phil Spencer will personally come to your home and open up a can of whop-ass.

On your screen for the xbox, the transfer speed is measured in Mbps whether its from the Internet or disk to disk transfer.
